Pakistan’s military leadership has reportedly emerged as a fresh channel for backdoor diplomacy between Iran and the United States, with Tehran conveying what Pakistani security sources describe as a “secret message" from Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, to Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir during high-level talks in Rawalpindi.
According to top Pakistani security sources, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni held a nearly 50-minute one-on-one meeting with Asim Munir at Pakistan’s General Headquarters (GHQ). During the meeting, Momeni is said to have personally delivered a confidential message from Iran’s Supreme Leader and discussed a new framework for mediation aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia.
The development comes at a time of heightened regional uncertainty following months of confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Sources said Iran’s political and military leadership acknowledged Pakistan’s “indispensable role" in efforts to ease regional tensions and praised Islamabad’s diplomatic outreach. During the discussions, both sides reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding regional security, stability and economic prosperity while exploring mechanisms for sustained de-escalation.
Iranian officials also appreciated Pakistan’s role in “Islamabad MoU", describing Islamabad as an “anchor for peace" in the region. While details of the understanding were not disclosed, the meeting reportedly focused on creating a structured mediation process that could help lower tensions across West Asia.
Beyond regional diplomacy, the two sides also discussed bilateral security cooperation, particularly effective border management along the Pakistan-Iran frontier. According to the sources, both countries agreed to maintain close coordination on security issues and continue consultations on regional stability.
Pakistan has reiterated its willingness to act as an “honest mediator" amid the continuing tensions in West Asia. Security sources further claimed that Field Marshal Asim Munir is expected to discuss the Iranian leadership’s message with the United States in the coming days. He is also likely to undertake visits to Saudi Arabia and the United States as part of broader diplomatic efforts aimed at encouraging dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
During the meeting, Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni reportedly conveyed that Tehran remains open to cooperation and dialogue but would not compromise on what it considers its strategic interests and national affairs.
