IOP Publishing (IOPP) has partnered with content infrastructure platform Cashmere to make its portfolio of book and journal research available for use by AI applications.
Cashmere provides infrastructure that allows publishers to license content to AI applications, support copyright-compliant access and gain insights into how their material is being accessed and used.
“Scientific publishers like IOP Publishing have spent decades building rigorously reviewed, trusted bodies of research – exactly the kind of premium content AI platforms need for reliable inference,” said Jonathan Munk, Co-Founder and CEO of Cashmere.
Antonia Seymour, Chief Executive of IOP Publishing, said: “AI is reshaping how people discover, explore and interact with scientific knowledge.
As it becomes a more prominent gateway to research, we want to help ensure that researchers and other users can find trusted, high-quality scientific content through those channels.

Under the agreement, IOPP content will be licensed for AI inference use cases through Cashmere’s infrastructure, which is designed to enable publishers to monitor how their content is accessed and used while protecting it from unauthorised use in large language model (LLM) training.

“Scientific publishers like IOP Publishing have spent decades building rigorously reviewed, trusted bodies of research – exactly the kind of premium content AI platforms need for reliable inference,” said Jonathan Munk, Co-Founder and CEO of Cashmere. “Our infrastructure gives IOPP a way to make that content available to AI applications on its own terms: licensed for inference, protected from training use, and fully tracked, so every use is visible and compensated. We’re proud to help extend IOPP’s mission into the AI era.”
The partners say the agreement also gives IOPP an opportunity to gather information about how researchers and other users interact with scholarly content through AI applications.

“As a purpose-driven publisher, we see this as an opportunity not only to support new routes to discovery, but also to help shape how scientific knowledge is represented, accessed and attributed in an AI-enabled world, in ways that support the integrity of the scholarly record and the wider research ecosystem. The insights from this partnership will help us better understand how people engage with research through AI, informing how we continue to support our community and advance the communication of physics research.”
