Star Tamil Nadu medium pacer Deepesh Devendran has said that he doesn’t fear getting injured while bowling fast, adding that he wants to maintain his fitness, hit the right lengths and have fun.

In the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League, Deepesh has clocked speeds of over 140 km/h, with one delivery touching 146 km/h. He bowled at a healthy pace during the U19 World Cup earlier this year, but has taken his speed to another level in just a few months.

Deepesh’s father, Vasudevan, also represented Tamil Nadu as a medium-pacer, and his son has followed in his footsteps.

“Bowling fast is something that comes to me naturally. I don’t fear getting injured and I am not worrying about it too much. I know what works for me. I want to be fit, hit my lengths and pannuven (have fun)," Deepesh said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.

Earlier this month in Dindigul, Deepesh clocked 146 kph when an inducker crashed into the stumps of Jafar Jamal, who has played 20 T20s for Kerala, before the batter could react.

Deepesh just found out he had breached the 145-kph mark after returning to the team hotel.

“I didn’t see the speed gun at that point actually and it was my teammates who told me. I thought it may have been around 140kph but it got up to 146kph. I think after that, I did not do well and gave away some runs, so I did not think too much about it and just went to the team hotel," Deepesh said.

“I did not work to increase my speed to 145kph. I think I did a lot of volume and kept bowling after the World Cup, played [the Chennai] league] and I feel it is a result of that," Deepesh added.

The 18-year-old’s approach has been aggressive too. He has exchanged words with batters, even at the India U19 level, underlining his willingness to embrace a contest and never shy away from a battle.

“My father has also told me not to be this aggressive. But it comes to me and I am just being myself. It was my Madurai team physio who gave me the idea about the arrow celebration and I started doing it," Deepesh said.
