India condemns attack on UN Peacekeepers deployed with UN Mission in South Sudan

India has condemned the attack on peacekeepers deployed with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in which an Ethiopian security personnel was killed and several others were injured. In a social media post, India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York said paid tribute to the fallen Ethiopian Blue Helmet and wish an early recovery to the injured peacekeepers.

Blue Helmets are the military personnel of the UN forces. They wear distinctive light blue helmets or berets to remain visible and neutral while helping countries navigate conflict, monitor ceasefires, and protect civilians.

The Mission said, India reiterates the fundamental importance of respecting the sanctity and inviolability of UN premises and personnel and calls upon all parties to ensure the safety and security of UN peacekeepers operating under UN Security Council mandates. India also urged full adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2589 on accountability for crimes against peacekeepers. The Mission called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the attack to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure full accountability.

Two UN peacekeepers were killed and seven others were injured in an ambush on a UNMISS patrol travelling to Pajut in Jonglei State of South Sudan yesterday. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and launched an investigation into the attack.
