India beat Japan 2-1 in women’s squash at 2026 Asian Games

India secured a 2-1 victory over Japan in the women’s squash team event at the 2026 Asian Games on Monday, with Tanvi Khanna clinching the winning match following Anahat Singh’s five-game loss to Satomi Watanabe. Joshana Chinappa opened the tie with an 11-1, 11-8 win against Japan’s Erisa Sano, giving India an early lead. This victory followed India’s earlier 2-1 win against China in the opening women’s team event match. Anahat responded by taking the next two games 11-8 and 11-7 to lead 2-1. Watanabe then forced and won a decider by taking the fourth game 11-8 and the fifth 11-9, completing a 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9 comeback to level the tie at 1-1.

In the deciding match, Tanvi Khanna defeated Akari Midorikawa 12-10, 11-9, 4-11, 12-10 to secure India’s win over Japan. This victory followed India’s earlier 2-1 win against China in the opening women’s team event match.

Indian shooter Esha Singh won the silver medal in the women’s 25m pistol individual final after a series of shoot-offs, finishing on 38 points equal with China’s Xiao Jiaruixian, who took gold, while North Korea’s Kim Hyon Suk claimed bronze with 34 points.

In kurash, Pincky Balhara earned a bronze medal after losing to South Korea’s Mo Sumin in the women’s -78kg semifinal. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured a medal by defeating South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal.

In archery, Chikitha Taniparthi advanced to the women’s compound individual quarterfinals by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yi-Hsuan in the round of 16. She had earlier beaten Bhutan’s Dorji Dolma in the round of 32. Jyothi Surekha Vennam lost to South Korea’s Kang Yeonseo in the round of 16 after previously defeating Kazakhstan’s Adel Zhexenbinova.

In tennis, Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale were eliminated in the women’s doubles first round by Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Yuliya Putintseva.

The Indian men’s squash team recorded a 3-0 victory over China in their pool match, while the women’s team also defeated China 3-0. India’s men’s cricket quarterfinal against Afghanistan was abandoned due to rain, with India progressing to the semifinals based on their higher seeding.

In shooting, Neeru led the women’s trap qualifying after day two, with Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat in 21st and 23rd place respectively. In men’s trap qualifying, Shapath Bharadwaj stood fifth, Kynan Chenai 19th and Ahvar Rizvi 32nd. The women’s 25m pistol team, comprising Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat, finished fifth and qualified for the individual final.

India also achieved a 3-0 win over Hong Kong in men’s volleyball. In men’s compound archery, Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru defeated compatriot Sahil Jadhav 149-148 in the round of 16 to progress to the quarterfinals scheduled for October 1. Sahil had previously beaten Mongolia’s Jamiyangombo Purevdorj 149-137 in the round of 32, while Ganesh defeated Indonesia’s Sostar Andaru Rinaldi 144-142.
