If not youngsters, then who? Army veterans back Captain's viral chopper proposal

It's said that everything is fair in love and war. But where does military protocol end and personal joy begin?

Days after a video of Captain Bharat Bhardwaj, a young Army Aviation pilot, proposing to his fiance in front of a military helicopter went viral, the officer found himself at the centre of a social media storm. Critics questioned military decorum, protocol and the "appropriateness of the personal act".

As Indian Army veteran Colonel AJ Raina (Retired said), "India's self-appointed supreme council of outrage... discovered a new national security threat".

After the clip went viral, reports emerged that the officer could face disciplinary action over a possible breach of military protocol. According to reports, the Army took cognisance of the matter and is likely to seek an explanation from Captain Bharat Bhardwaj.

Captain Bhardwaj proposed his fiance after the Passing Out Parade and convocation ceremony at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) in Nashik, where he had just completed his training. The viral clip showed the officer leading his fiancee, Aarushi, towards a stationary Cheetah helicopter before going down on one knee and presenting her with a ring.

Many people viewed it as a moment of personal joy after years of military training. But it triggered a debate over decorum, discipline and the use of military equipment in personal celebrations.

However, amid mounting criticism, several retired senior Army officers and veterans rallied behind the young captain.

"You want the young officer to sacrifice his life for the love of the Nation, but you don't want him to express his love for his fiance," Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon (Retired), wrote on X.

'YOUNGSTER NAHI KAREGA, TOH KAUN KAREGA?'

Among the strongest voices backing Captain Bhardwaj was former Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon (Retd).

"In the Army we say 'Youngster nahi karega, toh kaun karega'," Lt General Dhillon (Retd) wrote on X.

Dhillon also pushed back against suggestions that the proposal involved a security lapse.

"Military equipment has been on display during many 'Know your Army' exhibitions around the country. The students and non-military personnel have clicked photos with it, showing pride and love for the Army. So, please don't bring in the national security angle into this," he said.

"Let the young soldier do his national duty with pride and honour," Lt General Dhillon (Retd) added.

The retired general urged critics to focus on the officer's professional competence instead of what he described as "nuktachini" over a "pure gesture of love and belonging".

Lt General KJS Dhillon, speaking to news agency ANI, argued that patriotism and personal affection were not mutually exclusive.

"If he expresses love on social media or otherwise, it doesn't diminish discipline; it just shows a young spirit," he said.

'THERE IS NO SECURITY BREACH'

Lieutenant General Satish Dua (Retd) also criticised the backlash surrounding the viral video of Captain Bharat Bhardwaj.

"Too much toxicity on social media on this picture of a young Captain proposing in front of a chopper," Dua wrote on Instagram. "On many occasions, army equipment is open to public viewing and photography. There is no security breach".

He also highlighted the personal sacrifices that military personnel routinely make.

"This young pilot lives away from family and friends quite often. Let him be," Lt General Satish Dua (Retd) said.

'SOCIAL MEDIA'S COUNCIL OF OUTRAGE'

Colonel AJ Raina (Retd), a military veteran and author, also weighed in, mocking what he called social media's rush to pronounce judgment.

"India's self-appointed supreme Council of Outrage has discovered a new national security threat: an Army officer proposing to his fiancee in front of a helicopter," he wrote on X.

Raina argued that if any protocol had indeed been violated, the Army was fully capable of handling the matter internally.

"If there was a breach of protocol, perhaps the Army is fully capable of determining that itself," he wrote, adding, "Not every helicopter in a photograph is a national emergency. Sometimes a proposal is just a proposal".

The controversy began after reports suggested that people viewed the act as potentially inconsistent with military protocol because it took place immediately after an official military ceremony and involved equipment and premises linked to the Indian Army event. The Indian Army has not issued any public statement on the matter so far.

For now, Captain Bharat Bhardwaj's proposal might have triggered a debate over where military discipline ends and personal expression begins, if the veterans defending him are to be believed, a young officer can honour both his uniform and his fiance together, and one does not diminish the other.
