India has emerged as the world’s third largest automotive market and it opens up opportunities for car manufacturers to consider India as a primary recipient for future products. In that regard, we can see many OEMs patenting their current products, future products and even concept vehicles, even if it is just an IP protection exercise.
One such OEM is Hyundai and the South Korean automotive juggernaut has just patented one of their vehicles in India. We’re talking about what looks like a new variation of Hyundai Boulder concept which made its global debut in April 2026 at the New York Auto Show to take on popular off-roaders. An SUV version and pickup truck version will spawn out of Hyundai Boulder concept.
Hyundai Boulder SUV
Keeping off-roaders like Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender and others in the crosshair, Hyundai Motor Company has debuted Bronco SUV concept. It made its global debut in April 2026 at New York Auto Show and it will be Hyundai’s first ladder-frame offering for the North American market.
Hyundai Boulder is expected to spawn a pickup truck version first and then an SUV version. The SUV version of Hyundai Boulder was just patented in India. In its concept form, it is a boxy ladder SUV with rugged aesthetics and textbook SUV silhouette. Hyundai Boulder is embodying the company’s ‘Art Of Steel’ design language.
Notable design highlights include a closed-off grille with LEDs, vertically stacked LED headlight setup, chunky off-road-y bumpers, flat clamshell bonnet, upright windscreen, flared wheel arches, large wheels and larger M/T tyres, suicide doors like in a Rolls Royce and more. It has to be noted that the patented design is slightly different than what debuted earlier this year.
This suggests that the new design patented is of Boulder EV concept, while the one debuted before, was an ICE concept. When compared to the previous iteration of Boulder concept, we could see safari windows on the top, flood lights and a wrap-around glass element at the rear. All of these elements are missing in the new design patent.
What to expect?
On the inside, Hyundai Boulder concept will come with rugged and functional interior layout with a vintage touch. Concept has four mini displays on the dashboard for various infotainment purposes. Neo retro steering wheel along with the rotary dials on steering and on dashboard add tactile physical interface, which will sit well with purists. There is even a full-width HUD as well.
Hyundai Boulder will be designed and conceived in USA for the US market and 2030 is when it is projected to launch. Looking at the new design patents and its closed off grille, one could speculate that an electric version of Hyundai Boulder might be in the works too.
