India's win over Bangladesh has boosted their semi-final hopes but it has not yet confirmed it. What do they need to do to reach the next round?

India did a huge favor to their semi-final chances by securing a five-wicket win over Bangladesh in the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday (June 25). It was far, far from the Women in Blue’s best performance, as the fielders dropped almost half a dozen catches in the first innings and the batters played some ungainly shots in the second, but the fact that they got over the line anyway is an overall positive.

With one match remaining, against still-unbeaten Australia at Lord’s on June 28, India’s qualification is not yet mathematically confirmed.

South Africa, the only side that can still overtake them, need to win both their remaining matches, against the Netherlands on Thursday and Bangladesh on Sunday, to move to eight points. If the Proteas do sweep both games, India will need to beat Australia to stay ahead and book their semi-final place.

In that situation, both India and South Africa will be level on eight points, and the Net Run Rate (NRR) will be the tie-breaker. The Dutch did beat India in the recent group stage game, but they suffered a heavy 65-run defeat to the Aussies before that, which has made them play catch-up on NRR since.

Should South Africa drop even one of those two matches, then the best they would reach is six points. It would then take a miraculous combination of the Proteas winning their other game with such a huge margin and India losing to Australia so badly for the NRR situation to switch.

India will play against Australia after South Africa have played Bangladesh on June 28. This means Laura Wolvaardt’s team will be under the pump to win both their games and do it on a healthy margin as a precaution for a situation where India ends up beating Australia.

India would be best served by focusing on winning their final match and shutting the door on South Africa either way. But it’s also possible they go to that match knowing the defeat margin they need to avoid to stay ahead of South Africa in NRR.
