HONOR has launched the Robot Phone, the first device to carry ARRI’s “co-engineered with ARRI” designation, pairing a 200MP gimbal-mounted main camera with 10-bit ARRI LogC3 recording, ARRI Wide Gamut 3, and selectable ARRI Looks. It is the first commercial product of the Cinematic Imaging Partnership the two companies announced at MWC 2026, and it goes on sale in China first, starting at ¥9,999 (around $1,480).
There is no precedent for this. ARRI has spent more than a century supplying the top end of the film industry, and until now its image science has lived exclusively inside ALEXA bodies and the software built around them. The Robot Phone puts a licensed subset of that pipeline into a consumer device for the first time, on hardware that HONOR describes as a mobile production tool rather than a camera phone. For anyone shooting documentary, branded content, or social work who has been reaching for a phone as a B-camera anyway, the interesting question is not whether this replaces a cinema camera (it does not) but whether the footage behaves predictably once it lands on the timeline.

What ARRI actually licensed
The ARRI contribution is a color and workflow package, not sensor design or optics. According to ARRI, adapting elements of its Image Science for a phone required a dedicated implementation built around smaller sensors, compact optics, integrated processing, and real-time computational demands, which is a polite way of saying the ALEXA pipeline was rebuilt from scratch for a very different piece of silicon.
Three named technologies made the cut. The main camera records 10-bit ARRI LogC3 to preserve highlight, shadow, and color information for grading. ARRI Wide Gamut 3 supplies the color space. A selection of ARRI Looks can be applied on-screen at capture. HONOR pairs this with what it calls an ARRI CINEMA mode offering manual exposure and monitoring controls, and says the camera processes 14-bit 4:4:4 internally before outputting 10-bit LogC3 and 4:2:2 video. The company claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range and an 8dB improvement in video signal-to-noise ratio through AI noise reduction. Notably, ARRI’s own release attaches no dynamic range figure to the device at all.

LogC3, not LogC4, and why that choice makes sense
Cinematographers will spot the version number immediately. LogC3 is the encoding of the previous ARRI generation, used by the ALEXA Classic, ALEXA Mini, AMIRA, ALEXA LF, and ALEXA Mini LF. The ALEXA 35 moved to LogC4 and AWG4 as part of REVEAL Color Science, and ARRI has since made REVEAL available to the large-format bodies too.
Reading that as ARRI holding back its best work is the obvious interpretation, and it is probably the wrong one. LogC4 was designed to carry the extremely wide dynamic range of the ALEV 4 sensor; there is nothing in a 1/1.28-inch phone sensor that needs it. LogC3, by contrast, is the most widely supported ARRI curve in existence. Every NLE, grading application, and LUT pack on the market already handles it, and the conversion LUTs are free from ARRI. If the point of the exercise is that mobile footage should drop into an established post workflow without friction, LogC3 is the pragmatic choice. There is also precedent for licensing it outside ARRI hardware: Panasonic shipped ARRI LogC3 as a paid firmware upgrade for the LUMIX GH6 back in 2024.
What remains unknown, and what will decide whether any of this is useful, is how closely the phone’s LogC3 tracks the real thing. A curve is only as good as the calibration behind it. Cutting phone material against ALEXA footage in a single grade is the claim worth testing, and it cannot be tested from a press release.
The gimbal is the real hardware story
Strip away the color science and the Robot Phone is still the most mechanically ambitious phone camera in years. HONOR has built a four-degree-of-freedom motorized arm, the Titanium Agile Gimbal, into the rear of the chassis. It deploys from a recess in the camera island, rotates a full 360 degrees, and holds the main camera on three-axis mechanical stabilization rather than cropping into the sensor for electronic correction.
The engineering figures HONOR quotes are unusually specific. The titanium gimbal motor weighs 2.6g (0.09oz) and is 6mm (0.24in) thin, with control speeds up to 360 degrees per second, and the whole assembly fits inside a body that measures 9.59mm (0.38in) thick. HONOR says the system is 65 percent smaller than mainstream gimbals while offering 200 percent greater structural strength, built from more than 100 precision components across roughly 60 manufacturing processes and covered by more than 100 patents. The cost is weight: at 248g (8.7oz), this is a heavy phone.
Six movement modes are on offer, including AI SpinShot, Tilt Locked, Super Steady, FPV, and FPV Vertical. Voice commands can reposition the arm mid-take, and AI subject tracking with auto-framing runs during vlogging, livestreaming, and video calls. Gesture control deploys the camera without touching the device, which is the sort of feature that sounds like a party trick until you are shooting yourself with no crew.

Sensor claims meet the competition
The camera array is a 200MP main sensor on the gimbal arm, a 1/1.28-inch type with an f/1.6 aperture, supported by a 200MP periscope telephoto on a 1/1.4-inch sensor with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide covering 122 degrees. Processing runs on HONOR’s own H1 imaging chip alongside a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with video capped at 4K.
Here is where healthy skepticism is warranted. A 14-stop dynamic range claim on a sensor this size is a large number, and it arrives in a market where the bar has just moved sharply. The DJI Osmo Pocket 4P uses a genuinely larger 1-inch LOFIC sensor, and in our Lab Test it posted the highest dynamic range result we have measured across more than 70 cameras, beating the ALEXA 35 on that single metric. A pocket gimbal camera with a bigger sensor, a proven Log profile, and no phone attached is the direct competitor here, and it costs a fraction of the price.
HONOR’s marketing describes the Robot Phone as a portable cinema camera. We would not go that far. It is a flagship smartphone with a mechanical gimbal and a licensed cinema color pipeline, which is interesting enough without the category inflation.
What ARRI gets out of it
The strategic logic is easier to read than the imaging logic. ARRI is positioning Content Creation as a third business alongside Motion Picture and Live Entertainment, and mobile is the obvious entry point. The company follows Leica, Hasselblad, and ZEISS into smartphone licensing, though from a moving-image angle none of those partnerships attempted. It also arrives during a period of significant change in Munich, after Thomas Riedel acquired the company earlier this year. When we sat down with Riedel and Bermbach at NAB 2026, the answer to reaching a broader market was explicitly partnerships rather than a cheaper ARRI camera. This is that answer made concrete.
The two companies have also established a joint imaging technology lab, which ARRI says is exploring sensor-level optics and dynamic range, end-to-end workflows from capture through post, and imaging realism in the era of AI. The Hengdian launch event, staged at one of the largest film and television production hubs in the world, featured demonstrations from Academy Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda and cinematographer Wang Boxue, alongside ARRI Director of Image Science Harald Brendel. Those are manufacturer showcases rather than independent tests, and should be read as such.
The Robot Phone is available in Silver and Gray, with a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED display, MagicOS 10 on Android 16, and a 7,060mAh silicon-carbon battery with 120W wired and 50W wireless charging. Chinese pricing is ¥9,999 (around $1,480) for the 12GB/512GB configuration and ¥12,999 (around $1,925) for 16GB/1TB, with all conversions at roughly ¥6.75 to the US dollar. Preorders are open now and sales begin on August 18. ARRI states the device will initially be available in China and directs all product, pricing, and availability questions to HONOR, so a wider rollout is not confirmed.
