The collaboration is notable because Honda has traditionally developed its vehicle platforms, chassis and powertrains largely in-house.
It is important to note that Tata Technologies operates independently from Tata Motors. While both are part of the Tata Group, Tata Technologies is a global engineering and product development services company that works with multiple automotive, aerospace and industrial clients worldwide.
First Honda platform by an Indian engineering partner
According to a Nikkei report, Tata Technologies will assist with the end-to-end engineering of a new vehicle architecture that is expected to underpin multiple Honda models, including hybrids and other electrified vehicles. The platform will be used for products intended for Asia and other global markets, although North America will not be among the regions using this architecture.
This is believed to be the first time Honda has partnered with an Indian engineering company for the development of a vehicle platform. While Honda did not confirm details of the programme, the company told Nikkei that it is “always considering various possibilities for collaboration with external companies” as part of its strategy to strengthen future competitiveness.
Part of Honda’s cost reduction strategy
The move comes as Honda is working to significantly reduce vehicle development costs and improve efficiency across its global operations. Earlier this year, Honda cancelled development of three electric vehicle programmes that were planned for North America and Japan as part of a broader reassessment of its EV strategy. For the current financial year ending March 2027, the company expects to book a loss of around 520 billion yen (about $3.3 billion), largely due to supplier compensation and other restructuring expenses related to those cancelled projects.
Honda has also announced its “Triple Half” strategy, under which it aims to reduce vehicle development costs, engineering workload and development time by 50% compared to 2025 levels. Partnering with specialist engineering firms is expected to play an important role in achieving those targets. Industry-wide, global automakers are increasingly relying on engineering partners to shorten product development cycles while improving cost competitiveness.
What it means for Honda
Honda has not revealed when the new platform will be ready or which production models will be the first to use it. However, since it is expected to support multiple hybrid and electrified vehicles, the architecture could underpin several future models in India and other international markets.
The collaboration could also complement Honda’s growing focus on India. The company is preparing an expanded product portfolio that includes the upcoming 0 Alpha electric SUV, a new sub-4 metre SUV and an all-new midsize SUV over the next few years. Honda has also reiterated its plans to launch 10 new cars in India by 2030.
For Tata Technologies, the project represents another major milestone in its engineering services business.
