Hero MotoCorp is preparing to enter the electric motorcycle space with its first mainstream electric motorcycle expected to arrive in 2027. The move comes as Hero looks to expand its EV portfolio beyond scooters and take on manufacturers that have already started experimenting with electric motorcycles.
The company has been working on a broader EV strategy that includes multiple motorcycles aimed at different segments. Among these is the Vida Ubex, which is expected to be the more mainstream offering, while the Vida Lynx is being developed as a more niche electric trial/off-road motorcycle.
The company has previously indicated that it is developing electric motorcycles equivalent to different conventional engine capacities, including 150 cc and 250 cc segments. Hero is also working with Zero Motorcycles on more premium electric motorcycles aimed at the 350 cc and above category.
Hero hasn’t revealed the final technical specifications of its upcoming electric motorcycle yet. So, unlike the company’s existing Vida scooters, there are currently no confirmed figures for battery capacity, motor output, range or charging time. The company’s earlier plans, however, give us an idea of where things could be headed. Hero has been working on multiple electric motorcycle formats, with the mainstream models expected to cover the equivalent of the 150 cc to 250 cc motorcycle space.
There is also the long-discussed Splendor EV, which is being developed as a mass-market electric motorcycle. Earlier reports suggested that Hero was targeting around 2 lakh units annually for the model, underlining just how important an affordable electric motorcycle could be for the company. Whether this motorcycle eventually carries the Splendor name or becomes part of the Vida portfolio remains something to watch. Either way, Hero has a massive advantage here, it understands the commuter motorcycle buyer better than almost anyone else in the country.
The electric motorcycle launch is part of a much larger EV expansion at Hero MotoCorp. The company is planning to increase production capacity at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh from 3.3 lakh units to 6.6 lakh units annually by 2027.
It is also targeting electric two-wheeler production of around 2.8 lakh units in FY2027, almost double its FY2026 output. Hero is also working on a new fixed-battery Vida electric scooter, expected to launch in 2026, as it looks to bring EVs to a much wider audience. The company has already started moving in this direction with the VX2, which offers a Battery-as-a-Service option.
