Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai closed its opening week at Rs. 36 crore, with Rs. 2.50 crore nett coming on Day 7 (Thursday). That's an ordinary first week cume for such a well-budgeted entertainer, that too, starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, and others.
Touted to be the final directorial film of David Dhawan, the comedy drama met with mixed to average word-of-mouth, which is why it failed to gain traction so far. The film will face competition in Week 2 from several new releases from both Bollywood and Hollywood, namely Main Vaapas Aaunga, Governor, Disclosure Day, Backrooms, and so on.

The box office trajectory is a bit strange here. On Saturday, the film was left for dead with a drop from opening day, which itself could be said to be below average at best. Yet on weekdays, it is putting up decent to good holds. There is an offer in play, which could be helping, but when that didn't push it much on opening day, there is little it can do on weekdays. A somewhat similar pattern was seen earlier this year with a film that was pretty much done over the weekend, but was putting good holds on weekdays. The reason there was feeding. That film came down in the second week once feeding ended; let's see if that happens here as well.
That said, the weekdays' business has given the film a shot at crossing Rs. 50 crore nett, which seemed unlikely after that Saturday drop. The previous Varun Dhawan starrer Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsii Kumari collected Rs. 60 crore nett; that might be possible here. Not that it will change anything for the film's fate; it remains a box office disappointment.
