Guwahati, June 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Sunday, hinted at the possibility of a high-profile international dignitary visiting the state alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his proposed visit between July 1 and 3.
Addressing the public during a 24-minute live interaction on social media, Sarma said the first three days of July could become "one of the most important periods" in Assam's recent history if the visit materialises.
"The coming days, July 1, 2 and 3, could be among the most important days for Assam. Under the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we may get an opportunity to welcome an important and powerful international guest," Sarma said.
While clarifying that no official announcement has been made, the Chief Minister indicated that preparations were already underway.
"It has not been officially announced yet, but we are hopeful of Prime Minister Modi's visit during those three days and there could be an influential and internationally known dignitary accompanying him. Hosting such a guest would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Assam," he said.
The remarks come amid speculation over a possible visit by the Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, though neither the Centre nor the Assam government has officially confirmed any such programme.
Sarma said the state government had already begun beautification and infrastructure works across Guwahati in anticipation of the visit.
"We have taken up preparations and city beautification works. I seek the support and cooperation of the people so that Assam can collectively demonstrate its tradition of hospitality before the world," he said.

Acknowledging the inconvenience that the ongoing works may cause, the Chief Minister apologised in advance to residents.
"When a city is being prepared for an event of this scale, there may be some inconvenience to the public. For that, I apologise," he added.
The Chief Minister also asserted that the government's commitment to Assamese identity and development remained unchanged.
"Assam's culture and identity are not merely political slogans for us. We will continue working for Assam and its people without stepping back from our responsibilities," he said.
Earlier in the day, Sarma visited several locations across Guwahati to review infrastructure projects, public facilities and ongoing development works.
Highlighting the government's development agenda, he said work is continuing on its commitment to expand higher education and healthcare infrastructure across the state.
