GTA 6 Latest News: Grand Theft Auto 6 weapons are getting a major gameplay overhaul that will force players to think about where and how they carry firearms. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has confirmed that Jason and Lucia will no longer be able to walk around Leonida with an entire arsenal seemingly hidden in their pockets.
The biggest change involves the way NPCs respond to visible weapons. In previous Grand Theft Auto games, players could pull out powerful firearms in crowded areas without causing much reaction unless they aimed directly at someone. Rockstar now wants the world of GTA 6 to respond more naturally to what players do.
GTA 6 Latest News: NPCs Will Notice When Players Carry Guns
The new system makes weapon visibility an important part of free-roam gameplay.
NPCs will respond differently depending on what Jason or Lucia carries and how they carry it. A long gun strapped across the character’s back is less likely to cause trouble, while holding a long gun in public can make pedestrians uncomfortable and cause them to move away. Police can also react when they see a player openly carrying a weapon.
Nelson described the difference clearly: “It depends. The reactions are much more nuanced than before. So, if you’ve got a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it, and they react and start moving away from you.”
GTA 6 Will Not Hide Large Guns in Your Pockets
Rockstar is also changing how the protagonists physically carry their weapons.
Players can keep two concealed handguns available without displaying them to the public. Long guns work differently. Players can carry up to two, but the weapons remain visible rather than disappearing into an invisible inventory. One can sit on the character’s back while the other can remain in the player’s hand.
Nelson explained the system this way: “You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off hand [and] one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.”
GTA 6 Weapon Storage Will Make Cars More Important
Players will have to use storage locations when they want access to a larger collection of firearms.
Recent previews and interviews indicate that weapons can be stored in vehicles, while personal vehicles can hold the player’s broader selected loadout. Players can also use weapon lockers at Ammu-Nation locations. Rockstar has even confirmed that large weapons can remain inside the trunk of a stolen vehicle while that vehicle remains available to the player.
This approach gives vehicles a more important role beyond transportation. Players may need to decide which weapons to take with them before starting an activity rather than simply switching to any firearm from an unlimited inventory.
GTA 6 Could Make Weapon Choice Part of Every Mission
The new weapon system changes more than the inventory screen. It could also influence how players approach missions and free-roam activities.
A player heading into a quiet area might choose to carry only concealed handguns. Someone preparing for a major robbery could bring long guns but risk attracting attention while moving through public areas.
Recent reports also indicate that GTA 6 will make weapons feel heavier, with stronger recoil and greater impact than previous entries. Jason and Lucia can also hand weapons to each other, adding another layer to how players manage their arsenal.
GTA 6 Latest News: Rockstar Is Pushing GTA 6 Toward a More Reactive Open World
The weapon system fits into a much larger change in GTA 6. Rockstar has been adding more detailed reactions and interconnected systems throughout Leonida, allowing player actions to influence how the world responds.
Recent previews have highlighted changes involving police behaviour, driving, weapon handling, character relationships and other everyday activities. Nelson has repeatedly described the goal as creating a world where players can make choices without constantly feeling like they are interacting with disconnected game systems.
For GTA 6, that means even something as simple as walking down the street with a rifle could change the way an encounter unfolds.
GTA 6 Latest News: Players Will Need to Think Before Pulling Out a Weapon
The new system could become one of the biggest differences between GTA 5 and GTA 6 during everyday gameplay.
Instead of treating weapons as invisible equipment, Rockstar is making firearms part of the physical world. Players will need to think about what they carry, where they store it and whether pulling it out in public is worth the attention.
That approach also supports Rockstar’s broader push toward realism without completely removing the freedom that defines Grand Theft Auto. Players can still carry powerful weapons, but GTA 6 will make them manage those weapons more carefully.
