Google recently unveiled its biggest overhaul of Search in more than two decades, putting artificial intelligence at the center of the experience. But just days after the announcement, users discovered an unusual bug that exposed a strange side effect of the company's AI-first approach.

AI Overviews were first introduced as part of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE), which was unveiled at the Google I/O conference in May 2023

For a short period on May 22, simply searching for the word ‘disregard’ could confuse Google's AI-powered Search mode. Instead of explaining what the word meant, the AI responded as if a user was giving it a command.

What exactly happened?

Users on X noticed that when they searched for the word ‘disregard’, Google's AI mode failed to provide a dictionary definition.

Instead, the AI treated the search as an instruction directed at itself and replied with messages such as:

Message received. How can I help you today?

Rather than understanding that people wanted the meaning of the word, the AI assumed they were telling it to disregard something and continue a conversation.

The traditional web search results still appeared on the page, but they were pushed lower down because the AI response took center stage.

It wasn't just ‘disregard’

The issue was not limited to a single word. According to reports, several action-oriented words caused similar confusion, including:

Ignore

Dismiss

Skip

Start

Stop

Quit

In these cases, the AI often interpreted the search terms as commands instead of search queries.

Even a dictionary publisher joined the joke

The glitch quickly gained attention online, with many users poking fun at the situation. Dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster also weighed in with a playful response.

The post was widely seen as a light-hearted reminder of what users were actually trying to search for.

Google acknowledges the problem

After the issue spread across social media, Google confirmed that the bug was linked to its AI-powered Search features.

In a statement, the company said AI Overviews were:

"misinterpreting some action-related queries."

Google later fixed the problem, and searches for words such as "disregard" and "skip" now return proper definitions instead of conversational responses.

Why the glitch matters

The bug may have lasted only a short time, but it sparked a broader discussion about Google's growing reliance on AI in Search.

Many users argued that the incident highlighted the risks of prioritizing AI-generated responses over traditional search results.

Google's bigger AI plans

The glitch comes shortly after Google announced major upgrades to Search at Google I/O 2026. The company says AI Mode will increasingly function like a personal assistant. The ‘disregard’ incident may have been a temporary bug, but it offered an amusing glimpse into the challenges that come with making AI the new face of internet search.
