Going to the movies or a concert frequently? Your body might be ageing slower, says new study

Going to the movies might be doing more for your body than you think. Two people born in the same year can have physiological ages years apart, depending on how their bodies are ageing underneath. People with higher cultural engagement had an average physiological age of 66.9. Even after adjusting for income, employment and chronic illness, every one-point rise in the cultural engagement score was tied to a 31-day drop in physiological age. The study is observational, so it can’t prove that cultural activities slow ageing rather than simply reflecting it.

Going to the movies might be doing more for your body than you think.

A new study out of the Institute of Science Tokyo has found that older adults who regularly visit museums, cinemas, theatres and concerts have physiological ages that run noticeably younger than their birth certificates suggest. Published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the research adds a hard data point to something arts lovers have long insisted on instinct alone: that a life built around culture is a healthier one.

Physiological age isn’t the number on your ID. It’s a measure of how well your body is actually functioning, calculated through markers like blood pressure, lung capacity, cholesterol, grip strength and walking speed. Two people born in the same year can have physiological ages years apart, depending on how their bodies are ageing underneath.

The numbers behind the headline

Researchers Yusuke Matsuyama, Sakura Kiuchi and Jun Aida tracked 1,899 adults aged 50 and above through the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, drawing on survey waves collected between 2004 and 2009. Nurses measured ten physical health indicators, from pulse pressure to haemoglobin levels, to arrive at each participant’s physiological age.

Participants also reported how often they went to the cinema, a museum or gallery, or a theatre, concert or opera, each scored on a scale of 0 to 5 and combined into a cultural engagement score out of 15.

The gap was striking. People with higher cultural engagement had an average physiological age of 66.9. Those with lower engagement averaged 69.9, a difference of roughly three years. Even after adjusting for income, employment and chronic illness, every one-point rise in the cultural engagement score was tied to a 31-day drop in physiological age.

Why a night out might matter this much

Nobody involved is claiming a concert ticket works like medicine. The researchers point to a cluster of likely reasons instead: cultural outings get people out of the house and around others, which supports mental health; they usually involve some walking; and going regularly probably reflects a broader habit of staying engaged with the world rather than withdrawing from it. Notably, they write, the impact can be comparable to frequent physical activity.

The study is observational, so it can’t prove that cultural activities slow ageing rather than simply reflecting it. People who already have money, better health and more free time are also more likely to be the ones filling theatre seats, and the researchers admit their adjustments can’t fully erase that. The causal arrow may run in reverse: healthier people might just find it easier to leave the house for a matinee.

Still, the researchers frame cultural engagement as a modifiable behaviour, one that could work as a public health lever if museums, theatres and concerts were made more geographically and financially accessible. Which leaves a fairly good excuse sitting on the table: the next ticket you buy might be doing more than filling an evening.
