The incident came to light after the girl's family filed a complaint on Friday, August 28, reporting that she had gone missing from home without informing anyone. Police registered an FIR and launched a search operation.
CCTV FOOTAGE PROVIDES CRUCIAL CLUES
During the search, police teams examined CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area. The footage helped investigators identify Balraj, a resident of Tilpata village in Surajpur who was currently living in Haldoni, police said.
According to police, the footage showed the accused allegedly luring the girl away and later carrying her in a sack towards a field. Investigators subsequently questioned him, following which the girl's body was recovered.
Police said the accused was taken to custody on August 29 and questioned about the murder. During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had hidden the knife used in the crime in a green belt near the D Park police outpost.
ACCUSED KILLED IN POLICE ENCOUNTER
According to the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police, a team from the EcoTech-3 police station took Balraj to the location he had identified to recover the knife.
Police said Balraj got out of the vehicle and retrieved the knife from bushes. However, they alleged that he then suddenly picked up a .32-bore pistol that had been hidden in the bushes and fired at the police team with the intention of killing them.
Head constable Ravi Kumar, posted at the EcoTech-3 police station, was injured in the firing, police said.
The police team then opened fire in self-defence, seriously injuring Balraj. Both Balraj and the injured constable were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said doctors declared Balraj dead during treatment, while head constable Ravi Kumar remains hospitalised.
Police said they recovered an illegal .32-bore pistol, three spent cartridges and two live cartridges from Balraj's possession. His criminal history is also being ascertained.
POST-MORTEM AWAITED
The girl's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Police said the examination is being conducted by a panel of doctors and is being videographed.
The post-mortem report is expected to clarify the cause of death and establish other facts relevant to the investigation, including the family's allegation of sexual assault. Police and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team have also inspected the crime scene and collected evidence.

The girl's uncle, Mohammad Noshid, said a man who lived near their house and worked at Labour Chowk would sometimes sleep in rooms on their premises.
According to Noshid, the family discovered through CCTV footage that the girl had been put into a sack and taken towards a field. He said the accused had allegedly taken the girl from near a mosque while family members were away at work.
"We started looking for the girl after some time but found no trace of her. We only learned what had happened after checking the camera footage," Noshid said.
He added that the family had handed the accused over to police and wanted justice for the child.
Police said further legal proceedings are underway and that all aspects of the case are being investigated.
