According to a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official, a rumour about a fire spread among passengers travelling on the Udaipur Intercity Express (19665). Panicked by the rumour, several passengers jumped off the train.

Following this, four of the passengers who alighted were struck and killed instantly by the Patalkot Express (20424), which was approaching on the adjacent track, the official said.

“We received a complaint of alarm chain pulling (ACP) near Hetampur area in the Udaipur Express coming from Khajuraho. The ACP was triggered by a woman after a rumour of fire due to an alleged mobile blast in a general bogey," divisional railway manager of Jhansi region, Anirudh Kumar, said.

“Following this, passengers came down onto the track. The Patalkot Express, coming from Agra, hit four passengers who could not see the train because of a sharp 1.8-degree curve,” he added.

The deceased were identified as Afreen (35), Ashad (4), Shakuntala (60), and Veerma Devi (58).

Railway officials, police personnel, and administrative officials arrived at the scene and initiated relief and rescue operations.

“An inquiry has been launched into the incident," Kumar said, calling the incident “unfortunate.” The divisional railway manager said no fire had been reported in the train compartment, adding that around 100–120 passengers were travelling in the coach

"It was merely a rumour, because the train departed safely and reached Agra,” Kumar added.

An investigation into the incident is underway to determine the cause of the accident and the origin of the rumour.
