Indian motorsport has received an important boost, with the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) receiving provisional recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF). The recognition has been granted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, for the sport of motorsport in the country.
According to the official government letter dated 23rd July 2026, the recognition comes into effect immediately. FMSCI had submitted its request for NSF recognition on 11th June 2026.
FMSCI Gets National Sports Federation Recognition
The Ministry states that the recognition gives FMSCI a major role in the promotion and development of motorsport in India. It was granted after the government relaxed certain provisions of the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011.
These include requirements concerning affiliation across at least two-thirds of India’s States and Union Territories, affiliation of district-level associations with respective State/UT units and restrictions concerning membership of the federation.
However, the NSF recognition is currently provisional and comes with several conditions. FMSCI has been asked to amend its Constitution and Memorandum of Association to comply with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025 and associated rules within the stipulated timelines. The federation will also have to follow government guidelines covering elections of office bearers, financial accounting and auditing, organisation of national championships, grievance systems, RTI compliance and anti-doping regulations.
FMSCI will have to establish corresponding State/UT bodies in accordance with government instructions as well. Its accounts will be open for inspection by authorised government representatives and will need to be audited by a practising Chartered Accountant empanelled with the Comptroller & Auditor General.
Recognition Can Be Withdrawn
The government has also laid down conditions under which FMSCI’s NSF recognition can be withdrawn. These include violation of the recognition conditions or FMSCI’s own Constitution, non-compliance with Union Government directions and cases where the federation is considered to be not functioning properly.
Recognition can also be withdrawn if it was obtained through false information or misrepresentation of facts. Losing affiliation or recognition from the concerned international federation is another condition under which the government can withdraw FMSCI’s NSF status.
What Does It Mean For Indian Motorsport?
The development is significant because motorsport in India has traditionally operated differently from many mainstream sporting disciplines. Formal NSF recognition gives FMSCI stronger institutional standing within India’s sporting framework and could potentially open up greater government support for developing the sport.
The timing is also interesting. The government has recently shown increased interest in developing India’s motorsport ecosystem. India already has multiple international-standard racing facilities, with Buddh International Circuit (BIC) being the most prominent. BIC hosted Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix for three seasons between 2011 and 2013 and MotoGP Bharat in 2023.
