Opening the inning, Tom Banton top scored for the hosts with 73 runs. His opening partner Ben Duckett contributed 67 adding an opening partnership of 143 runs for the 1st wicket.
Jos Buttler then tried to stabilize the innings after some quick breakthroughs that allowed Sri Lanka back into the game. The England wicketkeeper-batter scored 69 runs off 49 balls. Will Jacks supported him well with a solid 52. The batting unit showed good form overall, but they could not quite get over the line in the chase.
The bowlers struggled to contain Sri Lanka’s batters on a good pitch. After being asked to bowl first, England conceded 321/6. Sri Lanka Preview
Sri Lanka fought very hard in the 2nd ODI and as a result go into the third ODI with the series locked at 1-1 after a spirited 16 run win in the second match at Leeds. They posted a strong 321 for 6 and then successfully defended it.
Captain Kusal Mendis led the way with a fine century, scoring 121 off 100 balls. He hit 14 fours and 3 sixes, while Kamindu Mendis supported him with 54.
There were decent contributions from Pavan Rathnayake (48 runs), Janith Liyanage (32 runs) and Pathum Nissanka (25 runs) on the way to putting 321 runs on the board. The batting effort set up a competitive total that proved just enough in the end.
Dunith Wellalage was the standout with the ball, taking 3 for 49. Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga claimed 2 wickets each as the bowlers held their nerve in the final stages to seal the victory and keep the series alive.
