End of 24-Hour Day? When Will Earth’s Days Become 25 Hours Long

One day on Earth equals to 24 hours since the Earth takes 24 hours to make one revolution along its own axis. But researchers have found out that the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down, leading to an extension in duration of days. The main reason behind this phenomenon is the effect of Earth's gravitational force on the moon and vice versa. As per the research findings, Earth's rotation has slowed down by 1.7 milliseconds each century due to tidal friction. Is the 24-Hour Day Coming to an End?

The concept of the end of the 24-hour day seems quite strange, but it is actually a naturally occurring event that has taken place on earth over billions of years.

Earth has slowed down its rotation because of the gravitational effect of the moon.

Even though the occurrence of 25-hour days will not take place until about 200 million years later, this natural event makes the study of earth's evolution much easier.
