ED Raids, Cash Under Bed: Fresh Heat On Abhishek Banerjee, Madan Mitra As TMC Crisis Deepens

The Trinamool Congress’s troubles seem far from over after police reached the Kolkata residence of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee at 2 am to conduct searches in connection with an alleged land scam investigation.

According to sources, the police team arrived in Kolkata on Friday night and visited Abhishek Banerjee’s residence after the arrest and interrogation of former Medinipur MLA and district TMC president Sujoy Hazra.

The operation, led by a team from Paschim Medinipur’s Salboni Police station and assisted by Kolkata Police personnel, went on for more than four hours, triggering sharp reactions from the TMC, which alleged that the police personnel broke open a lock and entered the premises to carry out the search operation. Mamata Banerjee was also present at Abhishek’s house during the police operation.

Abhishek alleged that police personnel had forcibly entered the residence after breaking open a lock and searched the entire premises. Meanwhile, central forces cordoned off the neighbourhood while personnel from Kalighat and Bhabanipur police stations assisted the search team.

Abhishek Banerjee Summoned On June 14

Abhishek Banerjee has been summoned for questioning in connection with the signature forgery case on June 14. The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also issued a formal summons to senior TMC leader and MLA Kunal Ghosh.

The agency has directed them to appear at its Bhawani Bhawan headquarters in South Kolkata on June 14 for questioning. The investigation pertains to alleged discrepancies in signatures on a document submitted to the West Bengal Assembly, which was intended to appoint Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition (LoP).

ED Raids Madan Mitra’s Properties

In a separate incident, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided TMC MLA Madan Mitra’s properties as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged municipality recruitment scam. Officials said they conducted searches at seven premises associated with Mitra.

Investigators claim that evidence gathered so far indicates that Madan Mitra received bribes in the form of cash and gold through intermediaries in exchange for facilitating the appointment of undeserving candidates to various posts in different municipalities, including Kamarhati Municipality.

During the search, officials reportedly recovered some cash and documents from underneath Madan Mitra’s bed. They also found information regarding six bank accounts.

ED officials claimed Madan Mitra is linked to 125 illegal appointments made through the recruitment premises. The searches are aimed at collecting additional evidence related to the alleged flow of money, recruitment procedures and the role of intermediaries in the appointments.

The raids come at a sensitive time for the TMC as it faces an existential crisis with dissent now visible among MPs, MLAs and senior party leaders. Even TMC stalwarts have publicly criticised Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership after the TMC’s crushing defeat in the West Bengal elections.
