A Rapido auto ride in Delhi has sparked a major debate on passenger safety after a researcher and content creator alleged that her driver was watching pornography and masturbating while she was seated behind him.

The Delhi-based researcher and digital creator, Sukanya Dutta, who is originally from Assam, shared her experience through an Instagram post and a video. According to her, the incident occurred during a Rapido auto ride from Safdarjung to Model Town that began at around 8:48 pm.

Woman Says Another Commuter Alerted Her During Ride

In her detailed account, Dutta said she was initially unaware of what was happening until another woman travelling on a motorcycle tried to get her attention at a traffic signal.

She wrote that the woman informed her the auto driver was watching inappropriate content on his mobile phone. As soon as the biker spoke to her, the driver allegedly hid his phone. Dutta claimed she then noticed that the driver was breathing heavily and touching himself inappropriately while she was seated directly behind him in the auto.

The incident allegedly took place when she was still around 30 minutes away from her destination.

Why She Decided Not To Leave The Auto

Addressing questions about why she did not immediately get out of the vehicle, Dutta explained that most of the route passed through highway stretches and she was unfamiliar with the area.

She said she did not feel it was safe to confront the driver or step out midway while travelling alone. Instead, she chose to remain in the auto until she reached a crowded and familiar location, believing that to be the safer option under the circumstances.

Dutta added that during the ride she contacted Rapido’s safety support team and informed them that she felt unsafe. She also reported that the driver was allegedly watching pornography while driving.

Driver Allegedly Admitted Watching Videos

After reaching her destination, Dutta confronted the driver, whom she identified in a video as Chotelal Kumar Yadav.

According to her, rather than denying the allegation, the driver said he had been watching “bideshi videos of women wearing chote chote kapde" (foreign women wearing revealing clothes).

The creator said she expected immediate assistance after informing Rapido’s emergency support team during the ride but alleged that no one contacted her or intervened while the incident was unfolding.

Rapido’s Response

Dutta also criticised the company’s handling of her complaint, alleging that she did not receive a follow-up call after reporting that she felt unsafe. She claimed Rapido reached out only after her social media post and video began gaining widespread attention.

In response to the viral post, Rapido apologised and acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations.

The company stated, “Hi Sukanya, the incident you have described is extremely concerning, and we regret the distress and discomfort you experienced due to the inappropriate behavior of the Captain. We also understand that not receiving timely support during such a critical situation can be extremely upsetting, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Customer safety is our utmost priority, and we have a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unsafe or misconduct behavior by Captains. Such incidents are treated with the highest seriousness, and strict action will be initiated against the concerned Captain."

Rapido later issued another update confirming that the driver had been permanently removed from the platform.

The company said, “As discussed during our recent call, we would like to assure you that this matter has been addressed with the highest level of attention. The concerned Captain has been permanently barred from the platform following a detailed review of his unprofessional behavior during the ride. We have also taken your feedback regarding the assistance provided during this situation seriously.

A thorough review of the interactions will be conducted to identify areas of improvement and strengthen our processes to ensure timely and appropriate support, particularly in safety-related situations. Customer safety, dignity, and respect continue to be our key priorities. We once again apologise for the experience."

Social Media Divided Over Incident

The incident triggered a wave of reactions online, with many users expressing concern over passenger safety, while others debated the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

One user commented, “I’m so sorry this happened this is so disturbing. @rapidoapp what is your safety team doing?!"

Another wrote, “I don’t get it . Even if he is watching porn why she is mad . Like he didn’t do anything to her 😭😭"

A third user said, “Please be careful while using Rapido. Rapido does not conduct background verification of its drivers, which can be a serious safety concern. In my experience, I have come across drivers with extremely poor behaviour in rapido as compare to ola and uber."

Another commented, “And this whole “videshi videos" 😩 ugh. This is the kind of mentality that, as a foreigner, I have felt so many times. As it is, all women face uncomfortable stares and harassment here… but you can just tell that for many “men", white woman = corn. Ugh. And the sheer AUDACITY. What level of fcked up do you have to be to think you can get away watching corn and touching yourself in public?? While driving?! Infuriating."

One user wrote, “As a man, these people saying watching porn in public are all backward minded. Does it also justify watching porn in office is okay? That Auto driver is doing his job and he and those defending him are an embarrassment to all men. I’m sorry to the ladies going through all that. Those backward men don’t even know the concept of privacy coz they also love watching porn in public and near ladies. India is doomed."

Another criticised the company’s support system, saying, “Why don’t you guys train your employees with some basic etiquette & safety rules for customers before allowing them to take ride requests? Passenger satety & comfortable ride is very important and minimum asked. Also both of your customer support system is pathetic, work on it please."

However, not everyone agreed with the criticism. One user commented, “If he’s watching video on his device, what’s your problem…. Its his phone…. Why are you sneaking in his phone."
