Dragon Ball Super's Toyotarou Teases the Next Arc With New Manga Art

The official Dragon Ball website further describes Garana: "Garana is the second-strongest fighter in the Frieza Force led by Sorbet. In it, Garan’s ship discovers one of the Super Dragon Balls in Universe 7, but Champa intercepts and destroys his ship before they can collect the Super Dragon Ball for the Frieza Force. The Dragon Ball Super anime remake's next saga is just around the corner, and Toyotarou is already giving fans a sneak peek at his version of the story.

In his latest "Toyotarou Tries to Draw" artwork series, the Dragon Ball Super mangaka has drawn the manga-only character Garana, who appears at the very end of the God of Destruction Beerus Saga. Garana’s character is actually crucial to the story in the manga, mainly due to the circumstances surrounding his death.

While Garana was only in the manga, it’s possible he could finally make his debut in the Dragon Ball Super: Beerus anime remake’s Golden Frieza Saga adaptation.

Along with the new artwork, Toyotarou shared a brief statement about this character: "This is an original manga character I introduced in the DB manga after the Beerus arc! Since I set him up as a character stronger than Shisami, I made him a tough-looking gorilla character."

The official Dragon Ball website further describes Garana: "Garana is the second-strongest fighter in the Frieza Force led by Sorbet. After discovering the Super Dragon Balls in the far reaches of space, he tried to report back to headquarters, but Champa, who happened to be there, destroyed him along with his spaceship. If he had survived, what kind of fighting would he have shown with that imposing physique...?"

Garana first appears in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 4, "God and God," which also makes up the end of the manga’s first volume. In it, Garan’s ship discovers one of the Super Dragon Balls in Universe 7, but Champa intercepts and destroys his ship before they can collect the Super Dragon Ball for the Frieza Force.

This entire sequence occurs over the course of a single page (Chapter 4 page 18), after which Garana is never erased by Universe 6’s God of Destruction and never seen again.

However, on the following page, Sorbet notes that Garana’s death is the final straw for the Frieza Force, which was losing too many high-ranking members too quickly. This realization is what inspires Sorbet to revive Frieza, thereby starting the Golden Frieza Saga.

Toyotarou has been making a point to bring back Dragon Ball Super’s most obscure side characters with his latest "Toyotarou Tries to Draw" works. First, he drew the Mogina Warrior (one of Beerus’ earliest anime-only victims) back in July, before returning in September with Geppuman, a petty criminal caught by Jaco in DBS Episode 31. With Dragon Ball Super: Beerus now already halfway through the God of Destruction Beerus Saga, Toyotarou will have plenty of material to draw from in the coming months.

Toyotarou’s monthly artworks have been all Dragon Ball Super manga fans have had to look forward to with the series on indefinite hiatus for the past two years, but that may be changing soon.

In the Dragon Ball website’s post for Toyotarou’s latest art, the site explicitly refers to Toyotarou as "the artist serializing Dragon Ball Super in V Jump!" Additionally, each issue of V Jump since August has specified that the Dragon Ball Super manga is on hiatus -- a step the magazine would likely never take for a series that were definitively canceled.
