Did Apple Consider a New Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra? Report Reveals

Apple reportedly considered a smaller Apple Pencil for the iPhone Ultra, but design and usability challenges could prevent it from launching.

Within a week, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to make its debut. While the final design has now reportedly been finalized, a recent revelation by Mark Gurman suggests that during the design phase, Apple was planning to launch a new Apple Pencil to be used alongside the iPhone Ultra. However, it is possible that the stylus may not make it to the market.

According to what Gurman has revealed, the new Apple Pencil would not have been the same as the models currently in Apple’s lineup. It would have been stubbier to complement the relatively smaller design of the iPhone Ultra. However, similar to the Apple Pencil on the iPad, it would have been able to magnetically attach to the side of the phone for storage and charging.

Gurman notes that the placement of the Pencil would have been challenging, as it would have been positioned on the side of the iPhone, unlike the iPad, where the stylus is placed on the top when the tablet is being used in landscape mode. The idea would also have gone against Apple’s long-standing stance of asking, “Who wants a pencil?” when discussing the need for a stylus on the iPhone.

Apple’s Apple Pencil lineup has largely been associated with the iPad, where the stylus has become an important tool for drawing, note-taking and other forms of creative work. The company has historically kept the Pencil away from the iPhone, even as rival smartphone makers have continued to offer stylus-equipped devices.

Bringing a smaller Apple Pencil to the iPhone Ultra would therefore represent a notable shift in Apple’s approach. But packing it in would have been a challenge as its presence could have led to extra mechanical fatigue for the smartphone hinge. Its possible that such a add on might come up in Future.
