11 Districts Under Orange Alert

The weather department has also placed 11 other districts under an orange alert, signalling the possibility of intense rainfall and weather-related disruption.

The fresh weather system comes at a time when several parts of Odisha are already dealing with waterlogging and rising river levels following persistent rainfall. Another spell of heavy rain could worsen the situation in vulnerable, low-lying areas.

“Following the formation of the depression, rainfall is expected to intensify over parts of North Odisha. Mayurbhanj and Balasore are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. At present, the rainfall intensity is relatively low, but the activity is expected to continue until tomorrow.

In districts such as Nayagarh, Khordha and Jagatsinghpur, light to moderate rainfall is likely. On August 19, weather conditions are expected to remain relatively dry. However, another low-pressure area is likely to form around August 21, which may trigger fresh rainfall activity across Odisha on August 22 and 23,” the IMD expert said.

Speaking about the districts under red and orange warnings, the expert said, “Wind speeds of around 80 to 120 kmph are expected over parts of Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Balasore. Meanwhile, districts including Kendrapara, Puri, Khordha and Bhadrak are likely to experience light to heavy rainfall.”

The depression's expected movement towards neighbouring states is likely to influence weather conditions across Odisha during the next 24 hours. Residents in the warning areas are keeping a close watch on rainfall and water levels as the state prepares for another round of potentially heavy precipitation.

With the system strengthening over the Bay of Bengal, the focus now remains on its movement, rainfall intensity, and the possibility of further flooding in already affected areas.
