Commonwealth Games Day 4 Highlights: India end with four medals

India rose to 8th spot in the Commonwealth Games medals standings with four medals, including one gold. Mirabai Chanu smashed the Commonwealth Games record and won the gold medal (India’s first at Glasgow 2026) in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event. Mirabai first lifted 85kg in the snatch category to claim the Games record and more or less assure herself of a gold since she was eight kgs ahead of the next lifter at the end of snatch. Then, in the clean and jerk event, she dropped the bar for the first attempt, but nailed her second lift of 105kg to secure gold.

He lifted a Games record of 121 kg in the snatch event, and then added 143kg in clean and jerk to heave a total weight of 264 kg. After three largely tepid days in Glasgow, the Indian contingent’s quest to start racking up medals started in earnest with the weightlifters entering the fray today. The redoubtable Mirabai Chanu will lead India’s lifters into action on Sunday. At the start of Sunday, India had won just the one medal at the Glasgow Games, thanks to Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal in para powerlifting. Meanwhile, Lovlina Borgohain is also assured a medal at the Glasgow Games after the luck of the draw gave her a bye into the semi-finals. He's coming out for a 133kg lift for his second effort. And it's a good one. For his third lift, he puts up 135kg, but fails to lift. So Raja Muthupandi is in silver medal contention with a snatch lift of 126kg. In gold contention is Malaysia's Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad who has a Games Record lift of 133kg. Mira comes from Meitei warrior clan. Her strength was evident from a young age, carrying heavy loads that even her elder brother struggled with. Mirabai began weightlifting in 2008, training at the Sports Academy in Manipur. Despite financial hardships, she travelled daily to Imphal by hitching rides with truck drivers to attend training. Mirabai played her first Nationals three years later and joined the National Camp in Bangalore in 2011. Since 2012, she has been training at NIS Patiala. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic, she made history as the first Indian to win a silver medal in weightlifting. In gratitude, she invited the truck drivers who helped her during her early years and touched their feet as a sign of respect. Currently, Mirabai serves as an Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Manipur Police.
