Cockroach infestation to expired food: Why FDA suspended licences of 5 Mumbai clubs

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the FSSAI licences of five high-end, prominent clubs in Mumbai, stating that the action was taken after inspections revealed serious food safety and hygiene violations. The move was part of a statewide enforcement drive that also led to the seizure of food stocks worth more than ₹1.04 crore over four days.The FDA said it conducted 35 raids across the state and inspected 81 food establishments between July 24 and July 27 under its "Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra" initiative. The FDA said it has suspended the licences of eleven food businesses. Twelve establishments were issued improvement notices, while one was ordered to shut operations.The five high-end Mumbai clubs whose licences were suspended are The Cricket Club of India, RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club, Bandra, and The Willingdon Sports Club. In Satara, FDA officials said they caught a person allegedly preparing artificial milk by mixing refined palm oil and an unidentified white powder with buffalo milk. In Nashik, authorities seized 200 litres of cow's milk from a milk collection centre after finding hygiene violations.The agency also intensified its crackdown on banned food products such as gutkha and pan masala. During the four-day operation, officials registered eighteen FIRs, arrested twenty-two people, and seized prohibited products worth ₹46.6 lakh.Apart from banned products, the FDA seized more than 21,400 kg of suspected substandard, unsafe and mislabelled food items worth nearly ₹58 lakh from various parts of the state. Samples have been sent to laboratories for analysis, and further legal action will be initiated based on the test results.
