Chand Mera Dil had a poor first day at the Indian box office, collecting Rs. 2.75 crore nett approx. From the advance bookings and start in the morning, it seemed like the film could be somewhere around Rs. 3.50-4 crore. However, the movement through the day turned out to be quite weak, and the film eventually failed to even cross Rs. 3 crore. Not that being over Rs. 3 crore would have been game-changing, but if it were over Rs. 4 crore, that would have been something to work with.
The film belongs to the “pain in love story” space, a genre that delivered a few surprise successes last year, including the blockbuster Saiyaara. What worked for those films was their superhit music. While the music here is also good, it hasn’t hit the mark. Without music working, it's tough for these small and mid-budget films out there, as the theatrical base has significantly eroded in the post-pandemic times relative to pre-pandemic highs of 2018-19.
The film had reduced ticket pricing on the first day. That might lead to muted growth over the weekend, as some of the weekend audience might have gone on Friday. The advances for today are not much better, which aligns with the above. As such, the low opening itself is a major setback, and if the film does not show strong growth over the weekend, its fate could be sealed rather quickly.
