Capcom says it will focus on reviving dormant IPs after Onimusha: Way of the Sword's breakout launch

Capcom has revealed it will focus on reactivating dormant intellectual property following a strong launch for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Way of the Sword is the series' first mainline entry in more than two decades. It sold more than 1 million copies worldwide on launch day, September 4, taking the Onimusha franchise's lifetime sales past 10 million units since it began in 2001. Capcom said pre-release demos and hands-on showcases had helped build awareness among a broad range of players ahead of launch. Way of the Sword casts players as Miyamoto Musashi in Edo-era Kyoto and is out now on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

"In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," the company said, adding that it intends to "further maximize corporate value" by drawing on its back catalog.

Capcom used almost identical language in a December 2024 investor release tied to the games' reveal, and told investors as far back as 2019 that unlocking value from its older IP was part of its long-term plans.

Way of the Sword casts players as Miyamoto Musashi in Edo-era Kyoto and is out now on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
