For those unaware, Android XR is a partnership project between Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm. It is officially described as an open ecosystem that is borne out of "years of investment in AI, AR, and VR" and allows third-party partner collaborations and development. It is clear that Samsung is gearing to populate the space that Meta Ray-Ban has largely dominated in recent years: a device that is not cumbersome to wear or look at while providing basic features like listening to music/attending to calls, taking pictures/videos, and querying AI.

The ecosystem is where Samsung Glasses will set itself apart from the current competition, Meta, till Apple joins the fray with their own smart glasses (expectedly next year). A well-functioning, multipurpose ecosystem not only elevates the user experience and adds in a sense of ease but it also locks down buyers into preferring products from specific companies.

I can only comment on whether the Samsung Glasses succeed or not once I get my hands on them. On paper, I feel they have a slight edge over the Meta glasses but the integration of the Galaxy ecosystem can be a double-edged sword. While it can have some excellent features that Galaxy users thoroughly enjoy, it can also mean that non-Galaxy users will steer clear if premium features are unavailable.
Nevertheless, the smart glasses market will see some much-needed competition and innovation in the near future and I am here for it.
