A 24-year-old woman allegedly jumped to death from the terrace of her in-laws’ residence in Greater Noida on Sunday, police said.
According to her family, the deceased, Deepika, was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry, police said, adding that her husband and father-in-law have been arrested.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Shailendra Kumar Singh said officers at Ecotech-3 police station in Greater Noida were informed about the incident on Sunday night.
Deepika’s elder sister, Sarika (28), said the deceased never told her anything about any major fight at her in-laws’ house.
Deepika’s in-laws, Sarika said, called them around 1 am informing them about the incident.
A 24-year-old woman allegedly jumped to death from the terrace of her in-laws’ residence in Greater Noida on Sunday, police said. A day later, scores of people thronged the house where her parents live.
According to her family, the deceased, Deepika, was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry, police said, adding that her husband and father-in-law have been arrested.
On Monday, dozens of women tried to console Deepika’s mother and elder sister. Someone said: “They (in-laws) could have just dropped her at her parents’ house last night.”
Deepika, who hailed from Jalpura in Greater Noida, got married to Ritik a year and a half ago.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Shailendra Kumar Singh said officers at Ecotech-3 police station in Greater Noida were informed about the incident on Sunday night. “Based on a complaint filed by the woman’s family, an FIR was registered. The woman’s husband and father-in-law have been arrested,” Singh said. The FIR was lodged under sections 85 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 80(2) (dowry death) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
Deepika’s elder sister, Sarika (28), said the deceased never told her anything about any major fight at her in-laws’ house. “There were small fights, which are common in any household.”
However, Sarika said, she has been under a lot of pressure recently. “Her feet were hurting. She grew weak after two abortions owing to medical complications. But her mother-in-law would make her do all the household chores,” she alleged.

Sarika also said that she spoke with Deepika twice on Sunday. “She told me in the morning that her mother-in-law had scolded her… How could a 24-year-old manage the entire house? But she was still doing it all alone… Later around 11 pm, I got on a call with her again. She told me she was tired and wanted to rest.”
Sarika said their father had gone to Deepika’s in-laws’ house on Sunday to meet one of their relatives who was unwell. The father returned home around midnight. Deepika’s in-laws, Sarika said, called them around 1 am informing them about the incident.
“I don’t know what happened… but she was not someone who would take such a decision,” Sarika said.
Deepika and Ritik got married in December 2024. According to neighbours, the wedding was grand — one they still remember.

The sister said the family spent over Rs 1 crore on the wedding. Deepika was an Integrated BA B.Ed graduate and the youngest of three siblings. “We gave a Mahindra Scorpio N SUV, cash, over 20 tolas of gold, 14 earrings to Ritik’s relatives, and furniture. Her in-laws did not like the bed and my father sent another. I have the entire list,” she said, adding that despite all that, her mother-in-law allegedly kept taunting and boasting how much they spent on their daughter’s wedding.
“Before Karva Chauth in October last year, the family started asking for more ‘gifts’,” Sarika said. “We thought that the family was good, but had it been so, my sister would have been alive.”
The mother was still in shock. “Meri laado ko koi wapas le aao. Kuchh bhi lelo, par wapas le aao (Please bring my beloved daughter back. Take anything you want, but bring her back).”
Police said that the body of the deceased was sent for a post-mortem examination. “The viscera has been preserved for chemical analysis,” said an officer.
“Further investigation and proceedings are underway,” DCP Singh said.
