Dhamaal 4 is off to a low start in the morning shows on its opening day, recording 10 per cent occupancy. The previous Dhamaal film, Total Dhamaal, had a GOOD opening in 2019, around 25 per cent. It is now the fourth consecutive week of major releases failing to take a start in the morning, with all four films posting broadly similar occupancies. For Welcome to the Jungle, it was a bit excusable considering that the film had previews the evening before, which opened to 25 per cent.

This kind of opening would be classified as POOR in the last decade, but post-pandemic, openings have been rare. The last film to open on a GOOD or better note was Dhurandhar: The Revenge, and before that, it was Border 2, which itself was barely there. Even the first Dhurandhar didn't begin particularly well in the morning and only gathered momentum during the evening shows. The proper GOOD opening before Dhurandhar: The Revenge was probably Saiyaara.

From the start in the morning, Dhamaal 4 could aim for Rs. 12-15 crore nett first day, depending on the movement during the day. If it gets to the higher end, that will be a decent to good result. Ultimately, it's about what kind of reception the film gets and how it legs. Bhooth Bangla opened to Rs. 12 crore nett on Friday and went on to collect Rs. 170 crore nett, while Welcome to the Jungle is likely to close under Rs. 140 crore nett from Rs. 15 crore nett on the first day. Dhamaal 4 would hope for the former.

Holdover releases, Alpha and Welcome to the Jungle, have dropped big in the morning from the previous day. They should get better in the evening, but the business is at low levels, so it’s immaterial. The Hollywood new release, Evil Dead Burn, has also opened low, although it's better in Tamil Nadu, where the horror genre scores well. The previous film in the franchise, Evil Dead Rise, did well in India, collecting Rs. 39 crore approx.
