Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is used to making headlines with the bat. But during East Zone’s Duleep Trophy quarter-final clash against North East Zone in Bengaluru, the teenage sensation showed that there is another dimension to his game.

Primarily a hard-hitting top-order batter, Sooryavanshi also enjoys bowling his left-arm spin and is uber-confident of his wicket-taking abilities.

Why else would East Zone captain Ishan Kishan throw the ball to the 16-year-old when they were in hunt for wickets?

“Wicket nahi gir raha tha opponent team ka toh mujhe bola gaya 2-3 over daalne ko. Ishan bhaiya ko aisa laga ki woh risk leke bowling de rahe hain. But unko nahi pata tha ki main wicket taker hoon (The wickets weren’t coming, so I was asked to bowl 2-3 overs. I think Ishan felt like he was taking a risk by giving me the ball. But he didn’t know that I’m a wicket-taker.)," Sooryavanshi said in a video shared by BCCI.

“I knew that even if I took five wickets, I was only going to get three overs to bowl. So I just wanted to make the most of those three overs, bowl as well as I could, and finish my spell strongly," he added.

It was a ‘risk’ that paid off.

Having been dismissed for just eight off six balls, Sooryavanshi left an impact with his bowling when North East Zone were 75/5 in their second innings. The left-arm spinner needed only four deliveries to make his mark, dismissing Kishan Lyngdoh for 25 and Imliwati Lemtur for four.

The double strike reduced North East Zone to 79/7 and helped East Zone tighten their grip on the contest.

Sooryavanshi eventually finished with impressive figures of 2/11 from three overs.

“If you ask batters, they’ll tell you they enjoy bowling, just like a bowler enjoys batting. A batter bowling and a bowler batting – both get equally excited about it," he said.

East Zone went on to dominate the quarter-final, posting 467 in their first innings before bowling North East Zone out for 111. After the follow-on, North East Zone were dismissed for 146, handing East Zone a commanding innings-and-210-run victory.

For Sooryavanshi, the spell offered was a chance to make a contribution after falling cheaply.

“It was a lot of fun because my batting didn’t go that well in the match, but contributing to the team with the ball was really enjoyable. It’s always more fun when a batter takes wickets," he concluded.
