This is just a mechanism by TMC and the left to malign the new BJP,” BJP Bengal spokesperson Keya Ghosh told ThePrint Friday, a day after the attack, but before Hafiz’s father had died.
CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka slammed the BJP and the West Bengal police.
“@WBPolice – Are you still Police of West Bengal or already migrated to becoming Police of @BJP4Bengal?
Responding to that video, CJP co-convenor Ranka slammed the BJP and the West Bengal police.
Speaking to The Print, BJP Bengal spokesperson Keya Ghosh condemned the act of violence.
“My father passed away on Saturday, a day–and–a–half after he was brutally attacked by these BJP local leaders,” Hafiz told The Print over a call on Sunday.
Abdul Hafiz, who blamed the attack on BJP workers, said his father succumbed to injuries at a government hospital in Bankura, where he was rushed after the assault.
New Delhi: The father of a Cockroach Janta Party supporter in West Bengal’s Bankura district died on 15 August, two days after he was allegedly attacked inside his home by a group of men angered by his son filming the dilapidated condition of his school as part of the CJP’s School Thik Karo campaign, police and the family told ThePrint on Sunday.
West Police has registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections related to criminal conspiracy, attempt-to-murder, grievous hurt and murder, against five persons. While two are at large, three have been arrested.
CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke said he stands firmly with Hafiz and his family. “We demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for his father’s death. A CJP team will visit West Bengal and ensure that Abdul and his family get justice.”
CJP Co-convener Ashutosh Ranka said he and other CJP workers will go to Bankura on Monday to seek justice for Hafiz’s family.
“Abdul’s only fault was that he wanted to get the school in his village repaired. But BJP goons beat his father so badly that he died. Tomorrow, I, @VijayMallangi, Ankit, Sudhir and all the CJP workers will go to Bankura to seek justice for Abdul’s family. I appeal to all the ‘cockroaches’ of Bengal to reach Indas Police Station in Bankura district,” he said in a post on X.
Speaking to ThePrint, a senior officer at the Indas Police Station said. “We have learnt that his (Abdul Hafiz’s) father died on Saturday. But we have not received a complaint, and no FIR has been filed yet.”
The BJP, meanwhile, has said if their workers are involved and there is a police complaint naming them, strict action will be taken against them.
“That said, did this person dare to do a social audit when the TMC government was in power? This is just a mechanism by TMC and the left to malign the new BJP,” BJP Bengal spokesperson Keya Ghosh told ThePrint Friday, a day after the attack, but before Hafiz’s father had died.
Hafiz, who had also participated in the CJP protests at Jantar Mantar, said he wanted to contribute to the social audit of schools to improve infrastructure and on Thursday went to the Karisunda Prathamik Vidyalaya, where he had studied as a student. He said he recorded some videos and returned home.
Abdul’s father sustained serious head injuries yesterday after he was attacked by RW goons. His condition turned critical today, and I have just received the heartbreaking news that he has passed away. Is this how @BJP4Bengal and @WBPolice are functioning? By 8 pm, some men turned up at his house, gheraoed it, allegedly thrashed him as well, apart from his ageing father. He said they snathced his phone and forced them to delete the videos of the school and also the ones he recorded at the Jantar Mantar.
“They charged at me with blades and sharp weapons and beat my father so much that he had to get stitches in his head,” said Hafiz, also claiming that when his family went to the hospital and police station, the alleged attackers also gheraoed these places and threatened them that they would be killed if he made such videos in the future.
SP Pasumarthi told ThePrint Friday that police personnel from the local Indas station had reached the spot Thursday night after learning about the incident, and moved Hafiz’s father to a local government hospital.
“We learnt that Hafiz and his family were being attacked on Thursday night and immediately a team reached the location. Taking help of a local driver, we removed his parents from the spot and rushed them to a hospital,” said the SP.
“We are yet to receive a written complaint from Hafiz and will act on it as soon as we receive it,” he added.
CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka slammed the BJP and the West Bengal police. “Our supporter from Indas PS, Bankura district, West Bengal, Abdul Hafiz was beaten up by BJP goons for visiting nearby school as a part of #SchoolThikKaro campaign. His father was also brutally beaten up.
“@WBPolice – Are you still Police of West Bengal or already migrated to becoming Police of @BJP4Bengal? Let us know through your actions, we will accordingly instruct the Cockroaches of Bengal,” he wrote.

Hafiz’s school
Hafiz said he attended the school years ago, and knew it was not in good shape. Having seen the impact of the Jantar Mantar protests, Hafiz decided to film all that was ailing the school. “I sought permission from the headmaster and upon receiving it, I went ahead and shot multiple videos highlighting the plight of the students,” said Hafiz.
“He (the headmaster) informed me that the children attending the school were struggling to access water and bathrooms, and the structure was crumbling.”
The resident of Bankura’s Karasundi village further alleged that the “BJP leaders” carried sharp weapons and he was close to getting stabbed.
After the Thursday incident, as the father-son duo made their way to the local Karasundi hospital for getting their medico-legal test, and receiving treatment, Hafiz alleged the same group “of local BJP leaders” now gheraoed the hospital. “They threatened the local doctor not to do the MLC, and took away my phone,” he claimed.
When Hafiz’s parents pleaded with them to spare him, they “coerced” him to “delete all social media and pre-recorded videos including those from his time at Jantar Mantar and at the local school”.
“They kept saying that Modi kheye, Modi ke bnash dibi (after benefiting from Modi’s schemes, you will inconvenience him?),” Hafiz claimed.
When he tried going to the police station to lodge a complaint, he further alleged that the BJP members gheraoed his house and refused to let them go, he added.
“At present there are multiple members of BJP and some villagers who are constantly keeping an eye on our house. We have not been able to leave and have been getting life threats,” he told ThePrint Friday.
Hafiz then recorded a video and shared it on social media platforms, tagging the CJP. Responding to that video, CJP co-convenor Ranka slammed the BJP and the West Bengal police.
CJP legal department head Ratna Singh also shared a handwritten note by Hafiz in which he has accused five people—Sheikh Azad, Abani Majhi alias Pintu Majhi, Srikanta Majhi, Ashish Majhi and Shintu Majhi—of “criminally intimidating” and “assaulting” him,
“Abdul in West Bengal is being harassed and criminally intimidated by 100–150 alleged BJP goons after he posted a video last night alleging that he was assaulted for conducting a survey of government schools in his area. These individuals have now allegedly gheraoed his house, preventing Abdul and his family from leaving, and are intimidating him and his family. Abdul has also shared the names of those allegedly involved,” her post read.
“I urge @WBPolice to intervene urgently. Local police officials have reportedly refused to take action. The police’s responsibility is to maintain law and order and protect citizens not to shield or enable those accused of intimidation,” she wrote.
With constant threats and the alleged round-the-clock monitoring of his house, and “no help” from the local police, Hafiz said he ran away in his torn clothes.
“I had to leave my house as they were constantly threatening to kill me. I’ve walked for three hours to reach a place far from my village and now I’m on the road to reach a place of safety,” Hafiz said Friday.
Speaking to The Print, BJP Bengal spokesperson Keya Ghosh condemned the act of violence. “We have promised the people of Bengal that bhoy (fear) is out and bhorosha (faith) is in. We have promised the people of Bengal that bhoy (fear) is out and bhorosha (faith) is in. We will make the schools better than what they were under the TMC government,” she said.
This is an updated version of the report.
