The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced India’s squads for the upcoming one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, even as discussions about the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue behind the scenes.

India will begin the tour with the lone Test from June 6, before shifting focus to the ODI series, scheduled between June 14 and June 20. The squad was finalised by the Men’s Selection Committee headed by Ajit Agarkar, along with Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, R. P. Singh and Pragyan Ojha, in the presence of BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

Rohit Vs Kohli?

According to a report in The Times of India, the Indian board and team management have started assessing Rohit and Kohli separately, rather than treating their ODI futures as linked decisions. While Kohli continues to impress with his fitness and form, Rohit’s physical condition has reportedly become a concern after a recent hamstring issue.

The report stated that selectors sought fitness updates on Rohit after he missed nearly three weeks of Indian Premier League (IPL) action due to injury concerns.

“Rohit didn’t report to the BCCI’s centre of excellence (CoE) for those three weeks. He has become lean but there are concerns about his body being able to take the load of high-performance sport. He has to field for 50 overs. ODI cricket doesn’t have the option of an Impact Player like IPL. Body takes time to heal when you are so close to turning 40," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to TOI.

The same source suggested that Kohli remains physically ahead of most players in the national set-up.

“At this moment, Kohli’s fitness and form is better than most cricketers in India. But one has to understand that Kohli and Rohit can’t be clubbed together anymore. A firm decision needs to be taken on Rohit after consulting the BCCI medical team," the source added.

The report further noted that team management officials are unconvinced by Rohit’s less aggressive batting approach since he stepped down as captain after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
