Barcelona were heavily linked with Argentina and Tottenham Hotspur center-back Cristian Romero in the days after Ronald Araujo’s departure on loan to Liverpool, but Romero will not be going to Catalonia after all.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham and Atlético Madrid have reached full agreement on a €40 million transfer for the defender, who gets his desired move to Spain after spending five seasons in London.
Romano’s report says Barça studied the deal but decided not to move forward, which opened the door for Atlético to complete the move once the sale of defender Nahuel Molina to AS Roma was finalized earlier this week.
It doesn’t look like Barça ever had any real interest in Romero, or at least not real enough to spend €40 million on his signature.
