Avengers: Endgame re-release is "required viewing" to understand Avengers: Doomsday

Ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday this Christmas, 2019's Avengers: Endgame is getting a re-release in cinemas with four minutes of previously unseen footage.

It doesn't seem like a lot, but according to directors the Russo brothers, it's an important four minutes.

Speaking to Fandango, Joe Russo said that the Encore version is "gonna connect the story of the two movies. There's a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, which is also inclusive of all the other stories that have been playing out.

"I think it's important to see Endgame in theatres again for two reasons. One, if you want to have a lot of fun cheering and screaming, and reliving all the emotions you had the first time you saw it.

"Number two, I think it's required viewing for following the story in Doomsday."

Earlier this year, Joe Russo said that the additional footage would be "set in the Doomsday story" and it's a "unique" way of bridging them together.

Meanwhile, Disney has published the list of films (and one TV show) it recommends for people to watch/rewatch as Doomsday preparation.

Fans did the maths, and there's about 40 hours worth of content to get through. It's a good thing there's about four months to go.

Doomsday will see Robert Downey Jr return to the MCU, but this time he's playing the big bad Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man.

He's got some big plan that puts the whole multiverse in danger, which means that the MCU heroes get to team up with members of the X-Men films.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on 18 December.
