Assam's 87.7% vaccination success faces test as measles resurges across globe

But across the world, measles is making an alarming comeback. The US, which declared measles eliminated in 2000, has recorded more than 1,800 cases across 39 jurisdictions this year, raising concern that it could lose its elimination status. Across Europe, outbreaks have been reported in Romania, Italy, UK, France, Germany and Spain, while the Pan American Health Organization has warned of a resurgence across the Americas. The World Health Organization now says measles outbreaks are occurring in every region of the world, driven largely by gaps in routine immunization coverage.

Guwahati, July 14: Some diseases which were thought to have been eliminated have started coming back in some countries because the authorities lowered their guard. On the other hand, in the case of Assam, the State has made remarkable progress in vaccination over the years but some children have been missing vaccination because of various reasons.
