Apple can shut down your 'rented' iPhone if you miss a payment

Miss a payment on a leased iPhone and iOS 27's "Restricted Mode" could leave you with nine apps—nearly all of them built to help you pay up. The finding, first reported by 9to5Mac and picked up by The Verge, lands days before Apple is expected to open sign-ups for its new Apple Upgrade leasing program. The framework is called App Managed Features. Apple starts renting out iPhones on July 28

Miss a payment on your leased iPhone and Apple may switch most of it off. Code buried in the iOS 27 beta describes a system that lets a financing partner push a device into "Restricted Mode," locking out nearly every app until the account is back in good standing. The finding, first reported by 9to5Mac and picked up by The Verge, lands days before Apple is expected to open sign-ups for its new Apple Upgrade leasing program. The framework is called App Managed Features. An authorised finance app enrols the iPhone, then keeps checking whether the contract is current. If it isn't, the lockdown kicks in and only a short allowlist survives—Phone, Wallet, App Store, Settings, Passwords, Clock, Health, Magnifier and Accessibility Reader. Read that list again and the logic is obvious. Wallet updates your card, Phone calls the lender, Passwords fixes a login problem. Nearly everything left standing exists so you can pay. There's no fixed number of missed payments that triggers it. That call belongs to the financing partner's app, which sets its own policy. Apps that send critical alerts—Messages, Home, some medication and safety apps—may stay reachable, though the provider appears to have a say there too.One gap worth noting: the code doesn't touch App Store subscriptions, so a service could keep billing you while its app sits behind the wall.Apple has also built a matching activation lock, called Partner Finance Lock, that stops a restricted device from being erased, resold or broken down for parts. It lives inside Find My so it survives a restore. The lender doesn't get location data from it.Apple Upgrade, as Bloomberg reports, opens July 28 in the US with Klarna financing it. Leases run 24 months on iPhone and Apple Watch, 36 on Mac and iPad, and signing up needs only a soft credit check. Pay it off early, upgrade mid-term or keep the thing at the end—all allowed, some of it for a fee. AppleCare doesn't come bundled, which the old iPhone Upgrade Program did include. The cheap stuff is out too: Apple Watch SE, base iPad, iPhone 16 and the MacBook Neo don't qualify. Why now isn't much of a mystery. Apple pushed Mac and iPad prices up by hundreds of dollars last month, pinning it on the memory shortage the AI data-centre build-out has turned ugly. The iPhone dodged that round and probably won't dodge September. A monthly plan softens the sticker, and Klarna absorbs the defaults—the same problem that soured Goldman Sachs on Apple Card. All of this sits in a beta, so the restriction code may still change or vanish. Apple hasn't commented.
