Anil Kapoor has opened up about a condition Sunita Kapoor laid down before they got married, revealing that she had made it clear she did not want to be responsible for kitchen duties after marriage. The actor shared the anecdote while hosting the latest episode of India Ke Top 1 Percent.

The conversation came up after a contestant admitted that she wanted to escape household chores. Her remark reminded Anil of his own marriage, prompting him to recall how Sunita’s condition pushed him to work harder at a time when he was still building his career.

Anil Kapoor Reveals Sunita’s Condition Before Marriage

Speaking on the show, Anil said Sunita had been straightforward about what she expected from married life.

“My wife Sunita had kept a condition that she would only marry me if she didn’t have to enter the kitchen," he said.

Instead of being unsettled by the demand, Anil said it became a motivation for him to become financially successful enough to make sure she never had to take on that responsibility.

“After listening to her condition, I thought I would have to work so hard and become successful that she wouldn’t have to go to the kitchen," he recalled.

The actor added that he took the condition seriously and has kept his promise through their marriage.

“I took that responsibility, and to date, Sunita has not entered the kitchen," Anil said.

Anil And Sunita Kapoor Have Been Together For Over Five Decades

Anil has often spoken publicly about Sunita and the role she has played throughout their relationship. Earlier this year, on their wedding anniversary in May, the actor reflected on 42 years of marriage and 53 years together.

“42 years of marriage. 53 years of togetherness. And somehow, every single year feels more full than the last," he wrote on Instagram.

Recalling their wedding, Anil said the ceremony itself was extremely simple and lasted roughly half an hour.

“It was the simplest wedding, done in about thirty minutes, no honeymoon, no fanfare. Just our parents, a few close ones, and the two of us. I never imagined that thirty minutes would turn into fifty-three years," he wrote.

Anil also credited Sunita with allowing him the freedom to concentrate on his career.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it: you are the reason everything works. The reason I could chase every dream, take every risk, and show up on every set. Because I always knew you were holding everything together, with grace and with love," he added.

Their Love Story Began With A Prank Call

Anil and Sunita married in 1984, although their relationship began more than a decade earlier.

In a 2024 interview with Hindustan Times, Anil had recalled that their first interaction happened through a prank call in 1973. At the time, he was still struggling to establish himself in films, while Sunita was already working as a successful model.

According to Anil, one of his friends gave his number to Sunita and encouraged her to prank call him. The actor said he was immediately taken by her voice.

In another interview with Bollywood Bubble in 2022, Anil described how that first phone conversation eventually developed into friendship and then romance.

“Our love story began on the phone, a landline, and then we became close friends. Of course, then we met, fell in love, and that’s where it began," he said.

He added, “From friendship, we felt that we were compatible in every department, in every way; as they say, marriages are made in heaven."

Sunita Supported Anil During His Struggling Years

Anil and Sunita dated for nearly 11 years before getting married. During much of that period, Anil was still trying to find financial stability in the film industry.

He has previously spoken about Sunita stepping in whenever money became difficult.

“When I met her, I was not doing very well financially. She would take care of a lot of things, and that’s how we shared the load," Anil said in the Bollywood Bubble interview.

He recalled that Sunita would often quietly pay restaurant bills before he even realised what had happened.

“She would quickly slip some money out of her bag, and before I could come to know it, she’d already paid the bill," he said, adding, “It’s all hats off to her for how she managed this relationship."
