An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker was shot dead, and another person was injured after four car-borne assailants opened fire in Punjab’s Ferozepur district on Saturday.
The attack also targeted the car of newly elected Nagar Panchayat president and AAP leader Vicky Maini, who escaped unhurt.
The victim is identified as 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, while 22-year-old Harpreet Singh alias Happy sustained gunshot injuries.
However, police suspect that Harpreet alias Golu could be behind the attack.
According to the information available, Gurpreet had purportedly slapped Harpreet alias Golu following a verbal conflict between the two.

The victim is identified as 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, while 22-year-old Harpreet Singh alias Happy sustained gunshot injuries. The two were travelling on a motorcycle with Maini when the assailants opened fire as the three were en route to their homes.
All three were together before the attack. One or two of the accused allegedly opened fire, with at least six to seven rounds fired from what is suspected to be a 9mm weapon.
Gurpreet was taken to Civil Hospital, Ferozepur, where doctors declared him dead. Harpreet received initial treatment before doctors referred him to a hospital in Ludhiana because of the seriousness of his injuries.
Maini was travelling in his car when the firing began. Bullets also hit his vehicle. He ducked to avoid the gunfire and left the car to take shelter in nearby shops, escaping without injuries.
Police said the attack appears to have resulted from personal enmity linked to the recent municipal elections. Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh said the accused had been identified, and eight police teams had been formed to arrest them.
Gurpreet’s family had earlier been linked to the Congress, while his sister-in-law is an AAP councillor in the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat.
Sources said Gurpreet’s family suspects a person named Daljeet of being behind the attack. However, police suspect that Harpreet alias Golu could be behind the attack. According to the information available, Gurpreet had purportedly slapped Harpreet alias Golu following a verbal conflict between the two.
Police have also ruled out a gangster angle in the incident.
The firing triggered panic in Mamdot, and police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. The accused remain at large, while police teams are conducting raids to arrest them.
