Aamir Khan married Gauri at 60 after saying he wouldn't. His friend reveals why

Aamir Khan had once said that getting married again at the age of 60 probably would not suit him. Now, his close friend and Lagaan co-star Amin Hajee has shared why he believes Aamir eventually changed his mind. He recalled a conversation in which Gauri spoke about wanting to balance her new relationship with her responsibilities as a mother. He added that Aamir told his friends, "I think I've found my magic," and also spoke fondly about Gauri's young son, Quinn. Before marrying Gauri, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira.

Aamir Khan had once said that getting married again at the age of 60 probably would not suit him. Yet, more than a year later, the actor married partner Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony. Now, his close friend and Lagaan co-star Amin Hajee has shared why he believes Aamir eventually changed his mind.

Speaking to Rediff.com, Amin said Aamir's earlier comments reflected where the relationship stood at the time rather than a firm decision against marriage.

"This is my personal opinion, but I think sometimes you wish for something without saying it out loud," Amin said.

He added that Aamir would never have spoken publicly about marriage without first discussing it with Gauri. According to him, it was possible that Aamir had not even proposed when he made those remarks.

"At that point, how could Aamir have answered that question? Maybe he hadn't even proposed to Gauri yet. Aamir is extremely sensitive to other people's feelings and would never make such an announcement without first speaking to the person involved," Amin said. Describing Aamir as someone who is always mindful of others, Amin recalled an incident from his directorial debut, Koi Jaane Na, in which Aamir made a special appearance.

Even after agreeing to be part of the film, Aamir reportedly called him to ask, "Amin, do you mind if I do a role in your film?"

Amin said he was stunned by the question and replied that Aamir's presence would change the course of his film. According to him, Aamir simply said he did not want to overstep. The actor even invited Amin and his wife, Charlotte, home to discuss the role before signing on.

Amin also spoke warmly about Gauri, calling her "an angel" and praising her thoughtful approach to their relationship.

He recalled a conversation in which Gauri spoke about wanting to balance her new relationship with her responsibilities as a mother. "I have a son who needs my attention and love. I have to make sure I find the right balance in this new phase of my life," she had told him.

For Amin, that explained why the couple may have taken their time before deciding to marry. "That was such a responsible thing to say. She was thinking not only about herself, but also about her son and how this new relationship would affect him," he said.

Amin also revealed that Aamir had introduced Gauri to a small group of close friends nearly a year before the wedding. He remembered the actor becoming emotional while sharing the news.

"About a year ago, Aamir invited a few of us to his home and said, 'I want to talk to you about something.' Gauri wasn't there that day. He told us there was someone special in his life. Aamir is a very emotional person, and I remember he had tears of joy in his eyes," Amin recalled.

He added that Aamir told his friends, "I think I've found my magic," and also spoke fondly about Gauri's young son, Quinn.

Aamir introduced Gauri as his partner ahead of his 60th birthday in March 2025, revealing that they had been together for around 18 months after reconnecting years after they first met. At the time, he had joked that getting married again at 60 probably would not suit him, though he added, "Let's see."

The couple eventually got married on July 5, 2026, in a private ceremony attended by close friends and family.

Before marrying Gauri, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The former couple welcomed son Azad through surrogacy before announcing their separation in 2021. Gauri has a son, Quinn, from her previous marriage.
