4 Fridays, 9 MAJOR releases, Rs. 1400 cr+ at stake: June 2026 emerges as Bollywood’s biggest and most COMPETITVE month yet; trade experts express SHOCK: “It’ll cut business of other films, lead to fights for screens”
June is here and like every year, the first Friday of the month will open with a bang. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is the big Hindi film releasing this Friday and it’ll clash with Bobby Deol-starrer Bandar and Ram Charan-starrer Peddi. Next Friday will see the release of Imtiaz Ali’s Diljit Dosanjh-Sharvari-Vedang Raina starrer Main Vaapas Aaunga, Manoj Bajpayee’s Governor, Kangana Ranaut’s 26/11 thriller Bharat Bhhagya Vidhaata and Vikram Bhatt’s Mimoh Chakraborty starrer 3D horror film, Haunted – Echoes Of The Past. While Cocktail 2 arrives in cinemas on June 19, the multi-starrer comedy Welcome To The Jungle will release on June 26. Meanwhile, Hollywood flicks like He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5 and Supergirl, backed by prominent studios, will also try their luck on the big screen this month.
4 Fridays, 9 MAJOR releases, Rs. 1400 cr+ at stake: June 2026 emerges as Bollywood’s biggest and most COMPETITVE month yet; trade experts express SHOCK: “It’ll cut business of other films, lead to fights for screens”
As per calculations made by Bollywood Hungama, if one talks purely of the Hindi and Pan-India films, more than Rs. 1,400 crores are at stake this month. In fact, June has emerged as Bollywood's biggest and most competitive month yet. Meanwhile, trade experts are not rejoicing, citing the ‘the more, the merrier’ adage. They fear that so many releases in a week can divide business and lead to screen-sharing battles.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh sighed, “Now you can’t stop anyone. Every producer is of the opinion that ‘Main kyun aage jaau?’.”
He added, “For me, all films are important. You never know which film the audience will take to. I hope every film works. Sabke paise bhi toh lage hai. However, there will be maara-maari for screens, as it’s said in the trade.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan commented, “It’s shocking. Why can’t the filmmakers plan their releases? There are times when we don’t have many releases for weeks. Releases should have been scattered. Producers should have planned in advance. But they don’t do it and later, they fight over screens. 2 films in a week are more than enough. Releasing 4 films in a week is not justified as it’ll divide the audience.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal, echoing this sentiment, said, “I was quite shocked. There were hardly any films in May and now suddenly, there’ll be an overflow of releases. This is the problem with our industry – there are periods of drought followed by a barrage of releases on certain Fridays.”
He continued, “Definitely, it’ll cut the business of other films and also lead to fights for screens. Distributors would ask for more shows for their films and try to cut down on shows of other movies. But exhibitors have become very smart now. They’ll open advance booking in 1 screen for two films initially. Then, whichever film sells more tickets will get more shows.”
Why are there so many films in June? Trade experts feel that since the IPL ends in the last week of May, it incentivizes makers to bring their films in June rather than a month before when the cricket tournament is on its final legs and viewership could be high.
Atul Mohan said, “IPL is a factor. In the evenings, people come home and like to enjoy the matches. This might affect the footfalls.”
Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, explained, “IPL is a reason, but traditionally, summer months have been active in terms of releases. There are three periods considered beneficial for the box office – summer months, Diwali and Christmas.”
He added, “Cocktail 2 and Welcome To The Jungle seem promising. Bandar is also tracking well and so is Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day also arrives next Friday. It’s a small film which could do decent numbers. In short, every week, we have promising films to watch out for.”
