Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi's 2009 hit 3 Idiots is set for a big re-release in cinemas on September 4, nearly 17 years after it first came out.

According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots Will Return To Cinemas On September 4.

3 Idiots Re Release Date: Last year, Aamir Khan’s 60th birthday film festival gave fans a chance to watch many of the superstar’s biggest hits on the big screen again. But one film that was missing from the line-up was 3 Idiots, one of the most successful and loved films of his career. That is finally set to change. According to Bollywood Hungama, Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots will return to cinemas on September 4, 2026, as part of NH Studioz’s plans following a major acquisition of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films catalogue.

3 Idiots Set For Theatres Again

The re-release will give audiences another chance to watch the coming-of-age drama on the big screen nearly 17 years after its original release. Starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani, the film remains one of the biggest milestones in modern Hindi cinema.

A source told the publication, “As part of its strategic plans, N H Studioz is set to bring back the iconic blockbuster 3 Idiots to cinemas with a grand re-release on September 4, 2026, giving audiences an opportunity to experience one of Indian cinema’s most beloved films on the big screen once again."

Why The Release Is Significant

Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots has already been back in the headlines this month, tied to Sonam Wangchuk‘s ongoing hunger strike over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. For years, a section of the audience has believed that Aamir’s character, Phunsukh Wangdu, better known as Rancho, was inspired by Wangchuk’s real-life work as an education reformer in Ladakh. That belief resurfaced strongly after Aamir’s own co-star, Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur in the film, shared a video backing Sonam Wangchuk and directly claiming Rancho was based on him.

Aamir Khana finally addressed it himself during a Q&A at the British Film Institute (BFI) and shut the theory down. “I didn’t know about Mr Sonam at that time when we were doing the film. I saw a video of Chatur just recently, and he said that. But he is wrong," he said, adding that neither director Rajkumar Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew of Wangchuk either while the film was being written. Aamir didn’t stop at the denial, though. He also spoke about Wangchuk’s health, now 19 days into his fast at the time, saying, “All of us are very concerned for his health and his life. We hope it ends well. All of us are hoping that he ends his fast."
