/ 7 Bollywood has given us several bold films but there is one movie which shocked everyone when it hit theatres. We are talking about Ek Chhotisi Love Story. Directed by Shashilal K. Nair, the 2002 movie starred Manisha Koirala, Aditya Seal and Ranvir Shorey in the lead. It revolved around a teenage boy’s obsession with his older neighbour, making it one of the most controversial Hindi films of the early 2000s.
/ 7 The movie told the story of a young boy named Tinu, played by Aditya Seal, who secretly watches and fantasises about his glamorous neighbour. The narrative explored adolescent desire, loneliness, fantasy and emotional confusion. While these themes might sound common today, Bollywood rarely addressed these topics at the time, which made the film a point of discussion.

/ 7 Ek Chhotisi Love Story became widely known for its bold scenes involving Manisha Koirala. At a time when mainstream Hindi cinema was still conservative about intimacy, the movie pushed boundaries with sensual sequences, mature themes and suggestive storytelling. Many viewers considered it far ahead of its era, while others criticised it for being too provocative.
/ 7 One of the biggest controversies surrounding the film involved Manisha Koirala publicly objecting to certain intimate scenes. She reportedly claimed that body doubles were used without her consent for certain scenes in the movie. She had also filed a plea against the movie, asking the makers to delete the objectionable scenes involving her body double.

In 2025, director of the film also recalled the controversy and said, "I needed a thin girl. I told her that and she was like, ‘I can go to the gym, workout and lose weight.’ When she talks so much that I won’t even take money. You get convinced. I gave her a couple of months but she couldn’t lose weight. She came on set on the first day of the shoot, I saw her and I was disappointed.”
/ 7 Actor Aditya Seal received recognition for portraying a confused, emotionally vulnerable teenager at a very young age. Although the film remained controversial, his performance was noticed for capturing innocence, obsession and adolescence realistically, something which was not commonly explored in commercial Hindi cinema then.
