The US House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected another effort to impeach President Donald Trump, with dozens of Democrats joining Republicans to effectively kill the measure.

According to Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas had forced a vote on impeaching Trump over the killings of two US citizens by federal immigration officials earlier this year.

The move, however, exposed divisions within the Democratic Party, whose leadership has largely refrained from making Trump’s removal from office a central issue as the party works to regain control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

The House voted 232-147 to table Green’s impeachment motion, a procedural move that effectively kills the measure without requiring lawmakers to vote directly on the impeachment resolution. Forty-seven members voted “present."

This was the third time in two years that the House has moved to quash an impeachment effort by Green against Trump.

Why It Matters

As in the previous two attempts, the vote highlighted divisions among House Democrats. While some Democrats backed Green’s effort, others voted “present" or actively supported the Republican leadership’s move to defeat it.

Green’s decision to force the vote without the backing of Democratic leaders has frustrated some members of his own party. One Democrat described the move to Axios as “fucked up", according to the report.

Green defended his repeated attempts to impeach Trump, arguing that the killings involving federal immigration officials were a “life and death" matter.

What Happened

Republican leadership’s motion to table Green’s measure passed 232-147. The vote allowed lawmakers to dispose of the impeachment push without taking a direct vote on whether Trump should be impeached.

The split among Democrats comes as the party focuses on its broader political strategy ahead of the November midterms. Some Democrats who voted alongside Green privately criticised the move, saying it was a distraction from the party’s messaging during the final in-session week before the elections.

Green, however, rejected those criticisms. He said lawmakers who opposed his effort “don’t have the courage to stand up and face me" and challenged his Democratic colleagues to debate the issue publicly.

The latest vote therefore leaves Green’s impeachment push defeated while again highlighting the lack of consensus among House Democrats over how aggressively to pursue Trump’s removal from office.
