22-year-old man hacked to death in Tarn Taran ‘honour killing'

In a case of alleged honour killing, a man was brutally murdered today outside the Tarn Taran bus stand by a girl’s brothers who were opposed to their marriage. It is also being alleged that the deceased had previously married another girl from Naurangabad in a similar fashion, but she later left him.

According to DSP (Headquarters) Jaspal Singh, Jagjit had allegedly abducted the girl from Naurangabad village nearly a month ago and married her against the wishes of her family.

Today, the girl’s brothers — Jaspreet Singh Jassa and Harpreet Singh Happy —surrounded Jagjit and allegedly hacked him to death. The victim was struck in the head and face with a sharp weapon, killing him on the spot.

A City Police team led by SHO Paramjit Singh Virdi reached the scene and took the body into its possession. Eyewitnesses said the accused showed no remorse after the killing.

The DSP confirmed that one of the accused has been taken into custody, and a search is underway to arrest the other.

Jagjit’s father, Tarsem Singh, claimed that his son had married the girl a month ago, but the accused had never previously expressed any resentment. In fact, the girl’s mother, Kulwinder Kaur, had visited their house earlier today to meet her.

The police have registered a case under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

It is also being alleged that the deceased had previously married another girl from Naurangabad in a similar fashion, but she later left him.
