Hyundai Motor Group is accelerating development of its next-generation SUVs for India. In the latest spy shots captured in Manali by automotive enthusiast Amarttyajit Sinha and Dhanushree, test mules of the upcoming 2027 Kia Sonet and 2027 Hyundai Creta were spotted testing together, indicating that both models are progressing through advanced validation stages.
The sighting is significant as both SUVs are expected to share several underlying technologies while targeting different segments of the Indian SUV market. While Sonet will continue in the sub-4 metre category, Creta will grow in size and is expected to be longer by about 100mm.
New Kia Sonet Reveals More Of Its Lighting Signature
The latest Sonet test mule appears to be the same QY2E development prototype that was first spotted earlier this month. However, these new images reveal more details of the rear lighting setup.
Despite the heavy camouflage, the SUV can be seen featuring vertically-oriented LED tail lamp elements connected by a full-width light bar. The lighting pattern appears more sophisticated than the current Sonet and aligns with Kia’s latest global design language seen on newer international models.
The overall silhouette remains upright, but the rear section appears more squared-off. A flatter roof profile and a more vertical tailgate could help improve practicality while giving the SUV a stronger road presence. Based on previous sightings, the new Sonet is expected to migrate to Kia’s newer K1 platform, which already underpins Syros. This platform is likely to bring improvements in structural rigidity, safety and packaging efficiency. A stronger Bharat NCAP performance is also expected.
Feature upgrades could include larger displays, an updated ADAS suite, enhanced connected car technologies and a more advanced electronic architecture capable of supporting expanded OTA functionality. Engine options are expected to continue with the existing 1.2-litre petrol, 1.0-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre diesel powertrains.
New Hyundai Creta High-Altitude Testing
Also seen alongside the Sonet was the third-generation Hyundai Creta, which has already been spotted testing multiple times in India and overseas. The latest test vehicle continues to wear extensive camouflage, but a few key details are visible. The SUV appears to have a more upright and boxier stance compared to the current Creta. Larger proportions and a redesigned front fascia are also evident.
One of the most important upgrades expected with the new Creta is Hyundai’s next-generation Pleos Connect system. Earlier spy shots had revealed the large centrally-mounted display that will replace the conventional dual-screen setup currently seen in Hyundai vehicles.
The new Creta is also expected to introduce a hybrid powertrain option for India. Other anticipated upgrades include a more advanced Level 2+ ADAS package, possible AWD variants, enhanced connectivity features and improved software-defined vehicle capabilities through Hyundai’s Pleos architecture.
Launch Timeline
The next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to arrive sometime in 2027, while the all-new Hyundai Creta could make its debut later this year. With both SUVs now undergoing testing together in challenging high-altitude conditions, development appears to be gathering pace ahead of their market introductions. The latest sighting also highlights Hyundai Motor Group’s focus on next-generation software, safety and electrified technologies, which are expected to play a major role in both SUVs when they eventually reach showrooms.
